Edit,

my motivation for this thread: to have a place to get the information about the current developments on dengue in Indonesia together.

Being no expert, I got the impression it is hard to discriminate in the early stage of the disease, the symptoms of Dengue and the symptoms of Avian Flu.
Some people are worried, they think (a lot of) Dengue patients are in fact BF patients. May be that is true, may be not, I don´t know.

So when we know more about the development of Dengue in Indonesia, we have information for travelers and information we can evaluate together with the development of BF in Indonesia.

Members are invited to join, if they feel this is important enough.

Dengue in Indonesian reports often is written as: "DBD"

The Bogor regency-run Cibinong Hospital has been forced to move most
of its dengue fever patients to its function hall
. The hospital's
director of services, Wahyu Kurdijanti, said it had run out of room
to accommodate the dengue patients, who number 58 in total, including
18 children.

"Previously, we had them lying up and down the corridors, but it
wasn't comfortable for them or their doctors," she said.

Anticipating further outbreaks of dengue in the regency, the Army's
transportation and logistics battalion in Cibinong, Bogor, has loaned
15 cots to the hospital. Wahyu said only 10 hospital beds were
currently unused. "We usually handle 1-2 dengue cases a day, but
patient numbers soar in the wet season," Wahyu added.

Most of the patients are from Karadenan village in Cibinong and
Cileungsi, Gunung Putri and Citeureup districts. Besides those
districts, the regency health agency has recorded Ciomas, Bojong Gede
and Darmaga districts as endemic areas.

Eulis Wulantari, the head of the health agency's communicable
diseases unit, said of the 685 dengue cases reported in 2006, 15
patients died. In 2005, the agency recorded 608 cases and 23 deaths.
"We have yet to update the data from last week. Our latest data says
there are 7 cases and one death," she said.

DBD anticipation, the Government prepared Health facilities

on Thursday, 25 Jan 2007 23:19:19

Pdpersi, Jakarta - the Government prepared health facilities to anticipate the possibility of spreading him Dengue Fever Dengue Fever (DBD) in the area endemi the illness that was spread by Aedes mosquitoes aegepty that.

Moreover, the government continued to intensify DBD prevention efforts.
"Usually in January has been at a peak his case, but now just began to emerge."

For anticipation hospital-hospital has been prepared, said the Health Minister (Menkes) Siti Fadilah Supari, in Jakarta, yesterday.
Menkes said efforts to deal with the spread of the DBD illness, that every year always emerged and claimed fatalities, could not be carried out easily.

"We still could not be free from DBD while the condition" for the "environment was not yet good, still was dirty and many pools" of "water."
The condition enabled the disseminator's mosquitoes of the breeding illness, he said.

So, he asked all the sides especially the participating community to be active towards the prevention of the DBD spread by maintaining the personal cleanliness and the environment around it. "And took part in doing PSN with did 3M," he said.

The eradication of the mosquitoes Nest (PSN) was one of the DBD prevention efforts that was carried out by draining the bath/the water reception, closed the meeting of the place of the water reception, buried second-hand tins, the second-hand battery and the second-hand tyre around the house et cetera.

Apart from through the movement 3M, the eradication of Aedes mosquitoes aegepty uptil now also was done through biological control efforts by using the eater's fish pinched and the chemical control through fumigation/fogging and the placing of the powder abate (temephos) to places of the water reception.

The activity usually more is activated again in the rainy season because of the rainfall that was high in the rain season and bad sanitation could increase the place of the Aedes mosquitoes family aegepty.

The data from Sub Directorate Arbovirosis the Department of the Health showed the number of DBD cases in the Motherland tended to increase every year.

When in 2002 only was gotten 40.377 DBD cases then in 2003, 2004 and 2005 their respective amount to 52.500, 79.462 and 80.837 cases.
The patient who died as a result of this illness also continued to increase, the death rate resulting from DBD in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 respectively reached 533, 813, 957 and 1.099.

Being no expert, I would say : Yes , it's possible to misdiagnose BF for Dengue in the first stages of the illness. That is why it seems important to watch dengue developments in Indonesia.

On the other hand, many Indonesian doctors are experienced in diagnosing dengue I suppose.

Re: Indonesia

And yet perhaps because the flu is so familiar, its terrors in 1918 were all the more dreadful. It is like a macabre science fiction tale in which the mundane becomes the monstrous.

When the illness was first observed, doctors were reluctant even to call it the flu. It seemed to be a new disease, they said. Some called it bronchopneumonia, others called it epidemic respiratory infection. Doctors suggested it might be cholera or typhus, or perhaps it was dengue fever or botulism. Still others said it was simply an unidentified pandemic disease. Those who used the term "influenza" insisted on enclosing it in quotation marks.

Comparing to December 2006, latest data indicates decrease and increase of sufferers in some provinces. Provinces with decreased number of case are NAD (134 to 19), Jambi (23 to 5), Bangka Belitung (7 to 6), DI Yogyakarta (49 to 22), West Kalimantan (274 to 53) and Bali (185to 31).

Meanwhile, provinces with increased number of case are Lampung (92 to 596), Banten (237 to 343), DKI Jakarta (906 to 2,022), West Java (1,594 to 2,326), Central Java (631 to 777), East Java (676 to 804), South Kalimantan (112 to 224), East Kalimantan (292 to 671), North Sulawesi (6 to 82), NTB (0 to 27) and Papua (7 to 11). There are 16 do not report DHF case.

This information is accepted by Center for Public Communication from Arbovirosis Sub Directorate, DG of Disease Control and Environmental Health concerning DHF progress until January 31, 2007 at 03.00 p.m.

Comparing to January 2006, DHF in January 2007 is fewer though number of death is higher than in 2006. In 2006, there were 18,929 cases with 192 died (CFR 1.0%). This year, until the end of January, number of DHF case is 8,019 with 144 died (CFR 1.8%).

DHF is close with us because many places are potential for mosquito's places. For example, house yard with many trees, where mosquito mostly lives on leaves carrying rain water. Minister for health, Dr. dr. Siti Fadilah Supari, Sp.JP(K) believes that it is not an easy thing for people to avoid mosquito, as vector of DHF. Therefore, she suggests people for always cleaning their environment from larvae.

Dengue outbreak leaves two dead

A dengue fever outbreak has killed two people and infected more than 110 in the Central Java city of Cilacap since early this month, an official said Saturday.

Sugeng B. Susanto, head of the Cilacap Health Office, said that the dead were identified as Fifi Tiara, 6, and Painah, 40.

Sugeng said the two victims were admitted to the city's hospital after already losing consciousness.

"If the victims were not in a coma there would still have been hope. But due to their poor condition, it was difficult to help them," he said.

Sugeng said the outbreak hit nearly all the districts in Cilacap, with the worst conditions recorded in Jeruk Legi.

Sugeng said his office would launch a major fogging operation to kill the mosquitoes spreading the disease. -- JP

Dengue fever kills 124 in Central Java

Agus Maryono and Panca Nugraha,

The Jakarta Post, Purwokerto, Mataram

Widespread dengue fever outbreaks in a number of regencies in Central Java have infected 6,318 people during the last three months, killing 124, an official said Tuesday.

Head of the communicable disease eradication section of the Central Java Health Office Lily Herawati said at a bird flu and dengue fever symposium in Purwokerto that the areas worst hit by dengue fever had been Cilacap, Banyumas and Purbalingga.

"We're sorry about the outbreak. Many victims have died because they were unable to reach a hospital in time. They were rushed to hospital in very poor health and they could not be saved," Lily said.

She attributed the widespread outbreaks of the deadly disease to the lack of attention paid to a mosquito nest eradication drive in the province. "Our research shows local people have not paid serious attention to the drive. They tend to underestimate such threats and be easy going about it," she said.

Lily explained that the spread of the disease was worsened by the high mobility of people between regions throughout the country and waste disposal methods.

"In villages, traditional waste disposal practices continue, causing potholes," Lily said, adding that potholes are an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes.

She said that her office will continue the mosquito nest eradication program to help curb the further spread of the disease. "We've also provided adequate supplies of medicine, especially in regions which are prone to outbreaks" she said

Meanwhile, at Jeringo village in East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, four people have died in the last month due to a malaria outbreak which has infected up to 60 people.

Approximately 30 people are still being treated, Jeringo village head Abdul Karim said Tuesday
. (Edit: Lombok is an island east of Java)

Karim said his village had experienced malaria outbreaks throughout the last three years, but questioned why the government was slow to react this year.

"I made another report yesterday concerning the four people that have died from malaria in our village," he said.

Many people in the village are farmers and have found it difficult to receive medical assistance due to the distance to travel to the nearest community health center.

The nearest health center is located 35 kilometers from the village along a road that is not accessible by car.

"We can hire a motorcycle taxi but the fare is very expensive at Rp 15,000 (approximately US$1.57). The round trip costs Rp 30,000. Therefore, we usually decide to stay at home despite the illness," Udin, a local resident, said.

42 die of dengue fever in Jakarta since early 2007

JAKARTA (Antara): 42 people have died of dengue fever in Jakarta since early this year compared to 51 throughout 2006, a health official said.

"That's one of the reasons why the governor has declared the city's dengue fever outbreak an 'extraordinary occurrence.' The average figure in March has exceeded our estimate to declare theoutbreak an extraordinary occurrence," deputy head of the Jakarta health service Salimar Salim said on Tuesday.

The estimate of dengue fever cases to declare an extraordinary occurrence was 3,107 based on the highest and lowest number of cases in the past four years, he said.

In March alone, the capital saw 4,423 cases of dengue fever, compared to 2,249 cases in the same period last year, he said.

By comparison, 10,942 cases of dengue fever were reported last year with 51 deaths, he said.

Hospitals swamped with dengue patients

JAKARTA: The number of dengue fever patients in the city is rapidly increasing despite the administration's efforts to curb the current outbreak.

The number of dengue patients this month jumped to 1,532 patients last Sunday, including four fatalities, from 525 patients the previous week.

However, the rapid increase in dengue patients did not trigger additional efforts to combat the virus from the Health Agency.

"We are still combating the current outbreak of dengue fever with fumigation. I am sure it will decrease the number of dengue patients in the city," said the agency's head Wibowo Sukijat, as quoted by the Tempointeraktif news portal.

Since the start of this year dengue outbreaks have plagued the city. As of last Sunday the agency had recorded 11,949 cases of dengue fever and 44 fatalities caused by the virus since the start of the year. --JP

Massive fumigation starting this Friday

JAKARTA: The City administration will start launching massive fumigations of critical areas Friday to kill the larvae of the mosquitoes that cause dengue fever.

"The fumigation will be held twice. Governor Sutiyoso will kick off activities Friday," the administration's assistant for the people's welfare, Rohana Manggala, was quoted as saying by the city's official news website Beritajakarta on Wednesday.

The second round of fumigation will be held on April 20.

Rohana said the fumigation would target 135 neighborhoods categorized as "red-zone" areas, as well as another 127 dengue prone-areas across the city.

She said her office would send 2,400 fumigators to the targeted areas.

The administration is under pressure to curb dengue fever, which has killed 44 people in the first four months of this year.

The administration has submitted the draft of a bylaw on dengue fever which would give a maximum punishment of three months in jail and a Rp 50 million fine for building operators or residents found with mosquito larvae on their property.-- JP
