About five cases are being reported every day

Dengue remains a cause of worry in the National Capital, which recorded another death due to the haemorrhagic fever. Prateek (14), a resident of Mehrauli, died recently due to dengue fever, taking the toll in the city this year to six. An average of five dengue cases were being reported daily from different hospitals in the city, say government sources.

Chairman, health committee, Dr VK Monga said that the total count of dengue cases in the city had gone up to 1,108. "The total toll due to dengue haemorrhagic fever has gone up to six this year. Prateek, who was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on November 17 and died the same day, too has been diagnosed with dengue fever," Monga said.

Haryana:

4 dengue deaths in Sirsa village lead to scare

Bhaskar Mukherjee, TNN | Dec 7, 2011, 06.56AM IST

Sirsa: The death of four persons in a week and 27 cases of dengue have triggered a scare in Pakka Sahidhan village of Sirsa district.

The health department woke up to the problem on Tuesday when the situation had worsened.

The authorities blame it all on the villagers relying on registered medical practitioners (RMPs) or quacks in the area.

Daya Nand, chief medical officer, General Hospital, Sector 16, said, ''A team is camping in the village for a month. We have taken blood samples and sent these to the laboratory for examination. Though three persons died on different days, the fever is a type of malaria and the residents are not aware of it. General hospital is getting one or two cases every day.''

Dengue cases in Gujarat fourth highest in country
Paul John & Himanshu Kaushik, TNN | Dec 18, 2011, 06.28AM IST

AHMEDABAD / VADODARA: If the figures of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) are to be believed , only one person died of dengue in the state since January 2011. The dengue figures published by NVBDCP-Gujarat till November this year claim that only 1,327 dengue cases were reported in the state since January with just one fatality . Going by these numbers , Gujarat ranked fourth in the country in terms of the number of dengue cases in the country in 2011, after Punjab , Orissa and Tamil Nadu . Besides this state health authorities have been claiming repeatedly that 2011 was an "eight year peak" in mosquito-related illnesses.

But sources say the Gujarat government may have tried to hide the r e a l numbers . Figures of the Amedabad Municipal Corporation itself show that since January 2011, at least five confirmed dengue deaths were reported in the city . Another 10 deaths were reported where the patient was tested positive for dengue , but had other complication too. The senior officer also raised questions over the figure of 1,327 cases . In Ahmedabad city alone there were 650 odd cases which were registered by corporation-run hospitals . The corporation is also in possession of data of dengue cases reported by private hospitals and clinics of private medical practitioners.

In Vadodara since January only 196 serum samples were taken for dengue tests out of which 11 tested positive.
A senior officer said the government has found a method to hide figures . "Once a case was reported , the state government will conduct a re-investigation and in many cases , they would negate the report of the private blood bank . The case would then be a disputed case and will not be taken in consideration for reporting ."
