Dengue figures baffle
October 26, 2011 By DC Correspondent WARANGAL
The district health authorities? official data showing just one dengue death in the last four months has come as a shock to rights activists and medical practitioners in the city.
As per government records, one person named Shankari Rajaiah, 45, of Bhupalpally, is the only one to have died of dengue in Warangal besides leaving 125 positive cases under 33 primary health centre (PHC) limits in 31 mandals during July-October.
This single dengue casualty figured prominently at a high-level health review meeting called by district collector Rahul Bojja with health officials on Monday evening.
The review meeting also had other startling statistics being thrown up like the over eight lakh populated city recording only nine positive cases in last four months despite the fact that dengue is considered predominantly urban centric.
These places are Kazipet (1), Kotturzenda (1), Hanamkonda chowrasta (1), Rangashaipet (2), Kareemabad (1), Fort Warangal (1) and Dargah Kazipet (2).
Similarly, the official report identified Mogulapally with highest number of 28 positive cases in last four-month period.
However, there are few takers for the official statistics supplied by the district medical and health officer Dr S. Shyam Sunder to the district administration as the last three months saw a multi-fold rise in dengue cases in the city.
As per one estimate, in just one month, there has been a combined strength of 72,000 dengue and viral fever cases, which have come from the city?s 30 odd general physicians at the rate of 100 cases in a day on average.
?It has now taken an epidemic proportion as we are suspecting every fever as a dengue case until proved otherwise,? said a senior MGM doctor and well-known general physician based at Kakaji Colony.
Another statistic compiled by Warangal Consumer Council (WCC) puts the dengue death cases at 82 in just one-month period. ?We have their complete names and addresses and would produce before HRC,? says Sambaraju Chakrapani, WCC president.
Surprisingly, speaking to this newspaper, Dr D.L.N. Kumar, district malaria officer, defended the single dengue death case compiled by district health department.
?
Officially, we are only recording those death data where the victims were diagnosed through MAC Elisa dengue test kit, supplied by National Institute of Virology, Pune,? said Dr Kumar, adding that this costly kit is available only at MGM hospital in the district.
It is, however, left unexplained, as to why PHC doctors are not collecting blood samples from dengue suspects and getting them tested using the MAC Elisa dengue test kit at MGM hospital.
