Colombian Child Dies from Medical Neglect

Bogota, Mar 4 (Prensa Latina) An 11-year-old boy died of hemorrhagic dengue in Colombia because he was denied medical assistance, his mother has denounced.

Dennys Urieta Rojas said her son, Joan Andres Alfaro Urieta, was only accepted at a clinic for assistance 15 hours after he was diagnosed and by then, his condition had worsened and he died.

More than ten clinics denied treatment in Barranquilla, even at the request of his doctors, but they all demanded advanced payments of 1,300 dollars. The Medical Director of Colmedicas in Bogota finally gave his consent after eight phone calls.

The President of the National Association of Health Professors, Ignacio Ruiz, declared health care in Colombia "is in intensive care" and called for urgent reforms to avoid similar future occurrences.
