Nearly 45 thousand cases of dengue in Brazil

TeleSUR ago: 03 hours

The State of Bahia, northeastern Brazil, 44 thousand 498 registered cases of dengue so far in 2009, of which 295 of hemorrhagic dengue, the most severe form of the disease, leaving 32 people dead, reported the AFP Tuesday to a source from the State Health Secretary.

The figure represents an increase of almost 300% over the same period in 2008, according to the informant. Around the year 2008 had been 8 mil 992 dengue cases with 15 deaths in Bahia.

The situation is partly due to the discontinuity of preventive action that arises from the change of mayors in the municipalities,
"said a spokesman for the Secretariat.

Healthcare providers say that the problem is compounded by the mixture of heat and strong rains in the state lately.

40,000 Dengue Cases, 32 Deaths in Brazilian State of Bahia

BRASILIA ? The number of people infected with dengue in the state of Bahia so far this year has reached 40,000 with 32 deaths, according to figures released Saturday by health authorities in this northeastern Brazilian region.

Up to 10 days ago, the state of Bahia had a little more than 32,000 cases of the disease, which is resurgent in some areas of the state?s interior like the city of Itabuma, which has about 210,000 inhabitants of whom approximately 9,000 have been infected and nine have died.

In Salvador, the state capital, 352 cases of dengue have been confirmed, although to date no fatalities have been reported.

The latest national count, released last week by the Health Ministry, identified the state of Bahia as the region with the highest incidence of the disease so far this year.

Nonetheless, it also said that the number of dengue cases confirmed this year nationwide is 28.6 percent less than the number registered in the first quarter of 2008, when the number reached 160,137.

Bay hit by dengue
38 dead and 45,683 contaminated by the virus in the main tourist destination of Brazil

JUAN ARIAS - R?o de Janeiro - 15/04/2009

The State of Bahia, one of the main tourism destinations in Brazil, which has thousands of beaches, from the largest epidemic of dengue in its history. According to official data from the Ministry of Health have been killed since January 38, of which 22 are under 15 years. The number of contaminated until yesterday was 45,683, representing an increase of 313% compared with 2008 when they were counted, 8002 cases. The disease spreads throughout the state and covers 295 municipalities.

The approximately 50,000 contaminated, have been 875 reported cases of infection with serious bleeding, which can lead to death. What is most strange is that the health authorities have already finished the summer season, the most conducive to the dengue epidemic. Brazil is already in autumn, but in the Bay Arreciado epidemic in full force.

Although the dengue scourge each year throughout the country in spite of national prevention campaigns, the state hardest hit was the previous years in Rio de Janeiro, by the presence of over a thousand favelas where hygienic conditions are very poor. Last year, identified cases of dengue across the country were 120,570, of which 36% occurred in Rio. The total deaths in Brazil had been 50, while in Bahia in just three months have already been 38 deaths.

In Brazil are still forced to study for the first vaccine against dengue, but there are still no dates for that conquest. Meanwhile, Health Minister Jos? Tempor?o emphasizes prevention as the most effective measure against the disease. The president, Luiz Lula da Silva Inazio also insisted in the same direction and has warned that without the cooperation of the citizens feel powerless to stop the disease.

Number of dengue cases rise in Brazilian state
? AP
2009-04-24 23:06:02 -

SAO PAULO
(AP) - Health authorities say the number of known dengue cases in the northeastern state of Bahia has soared by more than 250 percent so far this year.
A statement released by the state's health department says 50,864 dengue cases were registered through April 10 _ 266 percent more than in the same period last year.
The statement posted Friday on the departments Web site says that during this period the disease killed 41 people.

Officials have linked the rise to a drop in efforts to eliminate breeding grounds of disease-carrying mosquitoes.
Dengue causes high fever, severe headaches and joint pain. Most cases are not fatal, but the more virulent, deadly strain has been reported more frequently.

Dengue fever outbreak in northeast Brazil kills 47
10:56 | 28/ 04/ 2009

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 28 (RIA Novosti) - An ongoing dengue fever outbreak in northeast Brazil has claimed 47 lives since January, the country's Health Ministry said on Monday.

According to ministry statistics, 55,000 people in Bahia, the fourth most populous Brazilian state, are currently registered as dengue fever sufferers, a 220% increase from the same period of last year.

Authorities have declared a state of emergency in seven cities and requested aid from the federal government to cope with the disease.

Dengue is passed from human to human via mosquitoes or blood transfusions. Its symptoms are the sudden onset of severe headache, high fever, and muscle and joint pains, and are often diagnosed as influenza. It is also known as break-bone fever or bonecrusher disease due to severe pain experienced in the joints.

According to the World Health Organization, the disease is now epidemic in more than 100 countries.

Brazil?s Cities More at Risk from Dengue, Study Shows

RIO DE JANEIRO ? The number of Brazilian municipalities considered to be at-risk areas for dengue fever has jumped 228.5 percent over the past 13 years, from 1,753 in 1995 to 4,006 in 2008, the press reported Sunday, citing Health Ministry figures.

Dengue, which in 1995 was only a threat for isolated and sparsely populated municipalities, has spread almost all over the country by now and is particularly dangerous in the cities with their large concentrations of people, the O Globo newspaper said.

The geographic area threatened by dengue increased almost 2.3 times in the last 13 years and represents two-thirds of Brazilian territory.

Currently, the only regions that are free of the disease are the southernmost states and some isolated regions in the Amazon.

While in 1995 there were 50,000 registered cases of the disease and two deaths, those numbers skyrocketed in 2002, the worst year for the disease, to 697,900 cases and 150 deaths.

Despite the fact that the number of cases so far this year is 49 percent lower than during the same period in 2008, when the city of Rio de Janeiro experienced its worst epidemic with more than 100 deaths, currently there are 2,040 new cases registered each day, on average, in Brazil.

Every 48 hours, a Brazilian dies of the disease.

In the first 100 days of this year, there were 226,500 cases and 46 deaths.

Those figures, in all likelihood, will grow due to the fact that health conditions around the country favor an increase in the population of the Aedes aegypti mosquito that transmits dengue and reproduces in standing water.

Only 48.9 percent of Brazilian households have access to the country?s public sanitation system and 63 percent of the country?s municipalities do not have adequate sites to dump refuse.

Dengue fever deaths reach 53 in Brazilian state

www.chinaview.cn 2009-05-28 10:59:39

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 27 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from dengue fever has reached 53 in Brazil's northeastern Bahia state this year, the state's Health Secretariat said on Wednesday.

According to the secretariat, it is the highest death toll since it became mandatory to report dengue cases in 1995. Over half of the dead were under 15 years old.

The number of confirmed dengue fever cases in the state surpassed 73,600 as of May 16, up 173 percent from the same period last year, the secretariat said.

Most of the dengue fever cases are reported in six municipalities in Bahia's southern region, it added.

Despite the rise in Bahia, the number of dengue fever cases in Brazil has fallen 49 percent from January to mid-May, according to a recent report released by the country's health ministry.

Common in tropical climates, dengue fever is transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Its main symptoms are high fever, body and headaches, tiredness and nausea.

Dengue fever epidemics are quite common in Brazil. Last year, there were some 250,000 cases in Rio de Janeiro state with 174 deaths.

The Bahia recorded 91,493 cases of dengue fever between January and June 6, 2009, an increase of 199% over the same period the previous year (30,552 cases), according to report of the Secretary of Health of Bahia.

To date, 391 municipalities of the state (94% of total) reported the disease through the information systems of surveillance. The municipalities of Itabuna, Jequi?, Feira de Santana, Salvador, Ilh?us and Porto Seguro concentrated 43% of the notifications of the state, according to the office.

As serious forms of illness (complications with dengue, dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome in) there are 748 cases in 106 counties, including 55 deaths, of which 28 reached less than 15 years.

Itabuna recorded 12,718 cases, the largest number of cities in the state. Throughout the year 2008, the city recorded fewer than 5 thousand cases, according to the Epidemiological Surveillance of the municipality.

According to the Ministry of Health, among the possible reasons for the increase of dengue cases is the movement of a new type of virus and exchange of mayors, which may have compromised the implementation of the actions of control.

The municipalities of Itabuna, Ilh?us, Ipia?, Irec?, Jacobina, Jequi? and Porto Seguro are in an emergency situation from the day on March 4, 2009.

Among the actions to strengthen the control of disease, the secretariat and the ministry have made the training of professionals, awareness of the population and the distribution and application of larvicides and insecticides.

Dengue Fever Cases Down 50 Percent In Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 10 (Bernama) -- Brazil's Health Minister Jose Gomes Temporao announced Thursday that the number of dengue fever cases in the country fell 50 percent in the first half of 2009 compared with the same period last year, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

According to the minister, the number of deaths due to dengue fever also fell. Between Jan. 1 and June 13, Brazil registered 131 deaths, down 70 percent from the 436 deaths in the same period in 2008.

Rio de Janeiro state, which had an epidemic of dengue fever in 2008, registered the sharpest fall in the number of cases, down 96 percent. In Rio Grande do Norte state, the number of dengue fever cases fell 93 percent in the first half of the year.

Seven states registered an increase in the number of cases, compared with the first half of 2008. These states have 56 percent of the dengue fever cases in the country.

Temporao attributed the increase of cases to the change of governments, which took place in January.

The minister also announced that the government will use the internet to combat the dengue fever.

As it is happening with A/H1N1 flu, the ministry will maintain an updated report of the cases online, as well as use social networks such as Orkut and Twitter to help spread information on the measures to avoid the disease.

Personal note - change to another thread if this is not the place -

The cases 50% fall is because:
1) Climate conditions - it is in winter now, which means it's more dry, more cold, less rain, less water, therefore less mosquitoes and less dengue cases.
2) As it had a big increase in the cases earlier, the drop in cases where expected also
3) Changing government?!? The federal government is still the same, why didn't he took measures about that? As long as I know, it doesn't matter who is elected, the kids still have classes in school and people go to hospital. Hospital and school does not close or stop working due to changing govs... He's just looking for excuses... sorry... bad work.
4) Update report online... I see... yesterday they posted on twitter... it was just wrote dengue - no numbers, no data... same with A/H1N1, after they started testing (which took too long), they kept changing criteria on data, but at least it was being reported daily, after a while they stop announcing the suspects cases, after that they changed the testing criteria and now they release data twice a week and soon (they already announced) once a week... dengue cases... you have to do a very big and smart search to find where they put the data... not that transparent... usually you'll have to download some pdf.

As long as I know, dengue cases in here is not a problem of people who does not take care of their yard. Brazilian people are very collaborative and a simple announce on TV and radio is enough. I think it's good that the gov use twitter and orkut to inform people. It's ok, but it's not going to help dengue cases. The biggest problem about dengue are lakes - specially artificial ones (formed by hydroelectric for example), these are public areas and they need public care. The same happens to green public areas which have lakes or water inside them. Twitter and orkut will not kill mosquitoes on these areas... gov should do his work there, cleaning and keeping mosquitoes at bay.

Risk of epidemic hemorrhagic fever in the state (Parana)

Luciana Christ

Parana is likely to face a new epidemic of dengue hemorrhagic fever, as happened in 2003 and 2006. Monitoring of the State Department of Health (SESA) shows that the three types of viruses (DEN1, den2 and DEN3) are circulating in Parana.

People who have been infected by one of the three viruses can be contaminated by other types and are likely to develop dengue hemorrhagic fever during the second infection.

"The infected person produces a very intense immune response, which causes hemorrhagic situations," says Secretary of State for Health, Gilberto Martin. Dengue hemorrhagic fever destroys the wall of blood vessels and may cause gum bleeding, abdominal pain and red eyes in a few hours.

The secretary compared the care that people had in recent months with influenza A (H1N1) and the care that must remain in relation to dengue, with the arrival of warmer seasons.

"For the flu still have the prospect of vaccine for next year, while for a dengue vaccine has not. The only way is to fight the mosquito, "he said. According to him, controlling the spread of influenza is almost impossible, as occurs by droplets of saliva.

Moreover, dengue prevention should be pretty easy since just eliminate outbreaks of mosquito breeding (not leave standing water in containers and clean the water tank, for example).

This year there are more than 8.2 thousand suspected cases of dengue reported in the state, with no deaths. In 2008, two deaths and more than 14.8 thousand cases in the same period.

Kardec lived in the city, the neighborhood Miguel Sutil, and traveled weekly to the city where he died to serve customers in the region, which provided legal advice. "We do not know where he contracted dengue fever, because the two municipalities have a system of very poor health to fight the disease," he said.

According to the Municipal Sanitary this is the first death from dengue hemorrhagic fever reported in Caceres since January. So far the city has recorded 1619 cases of the disease, and 350 incidents were recorded from September and 33 patients were infected by dengue serious. In 2008 the council has confirmed 113 cases of the disease in the classic form and in the most aggressive.

This year an outbreak of dengue fever has reached the state. In the last weekly newsletter issued by the State Department of Health (SES) contained 40,659 cases reported. Only in Cuiabá notifications reached 11,235 cases, with 313 problems. Eight people died in the capital with the virus and the ninth case is under investigation.

Mato Grosso: 96.4% of the cities are plagued by dengue
Source: The Gazette

Infestation by dengue has now risen to 96.4% of the municipalities of Mato Grosso, and in 75% of the State Department of Health (SES) declared a state of alert because they present house index up 1%, which is recommended by the Ministry of Health the number of cases, which historically had an average of 10 thousand is 40 thousand in Mato Grosso - Cuiab? is only in more than 11 thousand cases. The increase in Mato Grosso is 237.97%. The events, which in the first half of this year focused especially in central and southern regions of the state - especially in the capital, Lowland and Great Rondon?polis - have already reached the north and the valleys of the Araguaia and Arinos as the coordinator of the Environmental Monitoring SES Oberdan Lira.

Thirty-five deaths have been confirmed and other 7 are analyzed, a situation that puts the state among the 6 in the country where there was growth and therefore receive special attention from the Ministry of Health (see box), while the other 20 and the Federal District celebrates reduction , and the Rio de Janeiro had the largest drop (95.9%).

To contain the spread of the disease and prevent further deaths, the Health Minister Jos? S?crates launched yesterday in Cuiaba national campaign to mobilize "Brazil United Against Dengue", reinforcing the need for engagement of the whole society. Actions include dissemination of massive advertising campaigns to raise awareness about the necessary precautions to combat the mosquito that transmits the disease, Aedes aegypti, and training of professionals and health workers. "We got the national level from 2008 to 2009, a 80% reduction in serious cases but without the commitment of all it is difficult to deal with a disease like this," said Tempor?o.

For the campaign, the federal government provided $ 1 billion, but the minister did not know what the amount allocated to Mato Grosso.

For the Ministry of Health, 18 municipalities in Mato Grosso are given priority in attendance, including Lowland Grande and Cuiab? (see table). The statement considered location, population and those at risk of introduction of new dengue serotypes. However, for the SES, 70 municipalities are already given priority, where the government is carrying out specific actions that mayors are aware of the importance of getting involved in the campaign.

An example is the case of Rosario Oeste (128 km north of Cuiab?), who has managed to reverse the critical situation faced at the beginning of the year and Paranatinga (373 km south of Cuiab?), which is moving to ease the crisis. "The figure of the mayor is very important. When he speaks, people listen, much more when we speak," says Oberdan Lira.

Temporao stressed the importance of people and governments have an overview about the 3 main breeding sites, being the first one in the house after the cleaning of cities, working with task forces and in partnership with the community and schools as well as investments in sanitation and access to water regularly. "If the person does not have access to water 24 hours a day, it will store and in doing so, depending on conditions, there is the reproduction of the vector there. It's all integrated work", points out, noting that stocks should be maintained the year.

He also notes that the mosquito shows a great capacity for adaptation. "Forget the phrase that says that the mosquito only like clean water and stop, because he is adapting."

Following the same reasoning, the Secretary of State for Health, Augustine More, points out that, unlike previous periods, the records of dengue are being observed throughout the year, even during a drought. She also emphasized the increasing number of cases among young people, especially among those younger than 15 years, and the increase in admissions.

Stocks - Moro submitted to the Minister of Health gave an overview of actions implemented in Ontario in the fight against dengue. He said contrary to popular belief, water tanks are only 1% of the places where outbreaks are found in the mosquito, while landfills account for almost 40%.

He said Tempor?o about making a large-scale in the capital and in Lowland Grande, started last month with means of transport, as well as specific actions, with the smoke and spray distribution of educational pamphlets for prevention. In Mato Grosso, the campaign was called "Mato Grosso against dengue: together we will win this game." The strategy is to make a call to combat dengue with the expectation of the World Cup, to attract the attention of the population and mobilize it.

In the fast lane - The country was reduced from 79.2% in severe cases, from 20,579 in the first 30 weeks of 2008 to 4281 in the same period of 2009. These cases correspond to the sum of the records of complications and dengue hemorrhagic fever. In Mato Grosso, the average of serious cases went up from 14 at 17 knots previous years to 1,200 in 2009, while deaths increased from 2 to 35. The latest data are from the SES and the first MS.

Yesterday, the City of Caceres confirmed the cause of death of the teacher Greice Aparecida do Nascimento, 27, held on Sunday. According to report from the Laboratory of Frontier, she died of shock syndrome, dengue, clinical form of the disease. Greice birth was 38 weeks pregnant to be brought into the hospital, doctors found no fetal heartbeat.

Dengue kills - Tempor?o The minister said that the MS is now studying in partnerships with major national and international laboratories, including strategies for the production of a vaccine against dengue, but noted that it is still far from being achieved. Thereby reinforced the need for people to act with the weapons they have, including the cleanliness of the yards. "Dengue kills."

MS says it is strategic stock of drugs, insecticides and equipment to fight the disease in the country. Are 2.77 million units of paracetamol (drops and tablets), 2.03 million bottles of saline injection and 562.7 thousand envelopes of oral rehydration salts to be used in epidemic situations. This medication is essential to patient care and will be used in epidemic situations in support of states and municipalities.

Another 250 thousand liters of insecticides and 3.5 tons of larvicide will be distributed over the vector control. There are also 6.5 thousand diagnostic kits, sufficient to reach 170 thousand tests. Moreover, if necessary, the Ministry of Health will make available a strategic reserve of 77 coastal fog and 142 motorized equipment with smoke. On November 24, the MS will release the results of national survey Quick Aedes aegypti (LIT) in 169 municipalities, including the Mato Grosso.

With this brings to 26 the number of deaths caused by the disease in Ceara, only this year.
According to the Executive Secretary of Sesa, Pereira Bastos, the high number is due to late diagnosis of the disease. "People have already searched the hospital in serious condition, which complicates the treatment, thereby increasing the lethality of the disease," he said.

According to him, those numbers were expected, because since 1986, when dengue emerged in Cear?, the severity of the cases only goes up. "This has been confirmed epidemiologically, the disease itself has increased its lethality over the years."

Considering the data presented, the Executive Secretary said that since 2007, the State has adopted as one of measures to combat the mass training of health workers in Ceara, both primary care, such as the secondary.

"Keep constant alert is a one-off, but with regular training, we have trained professionals to diagnose and make appropriate treatment of the disease," said Arruda.

The city with the highest number of deaths is Fortress with 17 deaths. Of these, 13 deaths are complications of dengue and DHF in four, severe form of the disease. Of confirmed cases to 3828 Capital records, and under investigation include 430 cases.

The secretary of the Health Department, Alex Mont'Alverne received estrangement with the high number of deaths due to this 88% reduction in the number of cases of the disease, compared to last year. "We will ask the Municipal Epidemiological Surveillance reassessment of these deaths, and from there to an analysis from the primary care.

On occasion, the City has recommended a blanket made of junk, no matter what was fixed or mobile. The key is not to allow rainwater stayed stagnant, encouraging the breeding of the dengue mosquito. "As this step was not taken, we had no choice but to fine him," said Barbosa.
