Dengue fever claims five in Sikka

KUPANG:At least five people have died and 58 are being treated at Maumere General Hospital for dengue fever in Sikka regency, East Nusa Tenggara.

The head of the disease control and environmental health office in Sikka, Iskak Lafian Tori, said Friday the epidemic has affected Alok, East Alok, West Alok, Talibura, Lela, Koting, Kewapante and Kaegae districts.

"The epidemic has claimed at least five lives in the past two months. We have deployed several teams to carry out spraying in the affected districts and to distribute free medicine to help relieve the epidemic," he said.

He also called on locals to keep their environment clean from the mosquitoes that spread the virus and to avoid nonpotable water. --JP
