Sukoharjo, Central Java (ANTARA News) - Two children died of dengue fever in Sukoharjo District, Central Java province, during April 2008.

In the first quarter of 2008, there were a total of 160 dengue fever cases and seven residents died of the disease in the district, Agus Prihatmo of the Sukohardjo health service said here on Thursday.

Most of the victims were children and they lost their lives because they had been admitted to hospital in very critical condition, he said.

Most of the dengue fever cases were found in Kartasura, Mojolaban, Grogol, Baki and Gatak subdistricts.

Lack of awareness in the community on the eradication of mosquito's nesting ground making the areas prone to dengue fever caused by aedes aegypti mosquito bites, he said.

Besides dengue fever, chikungunya virus has also infected a total of 473 people in Sukoharjo District, during the first four months of 2008, Agus Prihatmo said earier.

"During the January-March 2008 period, some 314 residents were infected with Chikungunya virus, and the number increased by 159 in April alone," he said.

The Chikungunya cases were found in 27 villages located in nine subdistricts, he said. Gatak Subdistrict has the largest number of cases with 37 Chikungunya patients.

The villages would continue to be prone to the disease during the current La Nina-induced rainy season expected to end in June, he said.

He urged the local residents to intensify the eradication of mosquito's nesting ground.

Chikungunya, like dengue fever, is spread by Aedes Agyptia mosquitoes and is characterized by an extremely high fever. But the symptoms are different because they include severe joint pains that could last up to a week, but sometimes to six months and even more. (*)

3 Korban DBD Meninggal Dunia

JAKARTA (Pos Kota) ? Korban penyakit demam berdarah dengue(DBD) di Jakarta Timur meningkat, sebagian dirawat di rumah sakit. Selama 2008 ini tiga orang meninggal dunia.

Menurut Kepala Bagian Humas Walikota Jakarta Timur, John Jefferson, Selasa (13/5), korban DBD paling banyak berdomisili di wilayah Kecamatan Durensawit yaitu sebanyak 937 orang sedangkan paling rendah di Kecamatan Pasar Rebo yakni 151 penderita.

Berkaitan masih bertambahnya korban DBD yang disebarkan nyamuk aedes aegypti, ia mengimbau warga agar senantiasa membiasakan pola hidup bersih dan sehat.

Menurutnya, aksi PSN 30 menit pada setiap Jumat harus tetap digiatkan di setiap lingkungan.
