Rio de Janeiro, Mar 1 (Prensa Latina) The number of dengue cases in this city, in the last ten days, increased to 915, despite actions taken by health authorities, the local press reported on Wednesday.

The last statistics released in this city confirmed that the Municipal Health Secretary?s Office has received 2,449 dengue notifications since the beginning of the year, 20 times more than those in the same period of 2005, and 2.5 times more than the total number of cases in that year.

The situation has worsened since one patient first diagnosed as being infected died with hemorrhagic-dengue symptoms, which they are currently trying to prove in a specialized laboratory.

Epidemiologist Meri Brian told the O?Globo daily many dengue cases notified are not confirmed by the later tests, and the speed of the case-number increase is lower than that at the beginning of the year.

Meanwhile, statistics confirmed that 67 percent of the cases registered are located in the western neighborhoods of this city, in Jacarepagua and la Barra de Tijuca regions.
