Dengue Causing Stepped Up Spraying In Broward, Florida

In Memoriam
Broward County officials are stepping up mosquito patrols after the first human case of Dengue fever was detected Thursday.

That person has recovered and is doing well. That person reported no out-of-county travel in the two weeks before becoming ill, but it's enough to keep the director of the Broward County Health Department working late.

"The Broward County Health Department is working with our partners at Mosquito Control regarding mosquito surveillance and spraying. We've also been providing information to physicians regarding diagnosis, testing, and disease reporting," said Dr. Paula Thaqi, director of the Broward County Health Department.

For Robert Nimmons of Wilton Manors, he is now being extra careful when he takes his daughter Robin out at night.

"Make sure we clothe her properly with long sleeves and long pants so she don't get bit," Nimmons said.

That's exactly what health officials recommend. They also said people should avoid outdoor activities in the early morning and at dusk, wear mosquito repellent and get rid of all standing water outside your house.

There are no other known cases in Broward County; but Broward is now the second place in the continental United States -- following Key West -- where dengue fever exists.

Last month a Dengue Fever case was suspected in Miami-Dade County, but tastes later revealed it was a false alarm.

Dengue causes mild to severe flu-like symptoms marked by pain in the bones and behind the eyes, plus fever and vomiting. In severe or repeat cases, it can be fatal.

The virus spreads only from the bite of an infected mosquito, not by human to human contact. There's no vaccine or drug to treat it. Many people who get infected never get sick at all.
