SCIENTISTS will release thousands of mosquitoes at Yorkeys Knob and Gordonvale in an attempt to rid the Far North of dengue fever.
The Eliminate Dengue research team insists the new field trial could find a sustainable solution to dengue outbreaks in the region.
And given the Far North's checkered history of controlled releases, researchers have taken measures to assess the project?s safety.
"This is not going to be the next cane toad outbreak for the region," project leader Prof Scott O'Neill said.
"We've sought independent assessments from the CSIRO and the Federal Department of Environment and Heritage, and we got regulatory approval last week."
The team spent two years getting locals on side as well...
