Biological warfare bid to stop dengue in Far North

SCIENTISTS will release thousands of mosquitoes at Yorkeys Knob and Gordonvale in an attempt to rid the Far North of dengue fever.

The Eliminate Dengue research team insists the new field trial could find a sustainable solution to dengue outbreaks in the region.

And given the Far North's checkered history of controlled releases, researchers have taken measures to assess the project?s safety.

"This is not going to be the next cane toad outbreak for the region," project leader Prof Scott O'Neill said.

"We've sought independent assessments from the CSIRO and the Federal Department of Environment and Heritage, and we got regulatory approval last week."

The team spent two years getting locals on side as well...

Dengue scientists monitoring mosquito adaptations

A medical entomologist at James Cook University (JCU) at Cairns in far north Queensland says mosquitos carrying dengue fever may eventually find their way around a new control measure.

The Eliminate Dengue project will begin field trials of the natural control measure after 15 years of research.

Death sparks dengue warning

People travelling to Indonesia have been warned about the risk of dengue fever after the sudden death of a Western Australian man.

The 38 year old died at his home in Karratha on Wednesday.

Police say they have not ruled out the possibility the man had a mosquito-borne virus. It is understood he had recently returned from overseas travel.

More dengue fever cases uncovered in north Qld

Another three cases of dengue fever have been recorded at Townsville in north Queensland, bringing the city's tally to 13 since the start of this year.

The three people diagnosed this week are from the same house in the suburb of Railway Estate.

Public health medical officer Dr Steven Donohue says there are probably more undiagnosed cases in the city.

A DENGUE-breeding hotspot has been identified at Westcourt after spreading from neighbouring Parramatta Park.

Queensland Health confirmed two new cases of type 2 dengue, which brings the number of victims in the latest outbreak to 19...

Potential fourth dengue case in Townsville

Health officials expect to know this week if Townsville, in north Queensland, has its fourth case of dengue fever in less than a fortnight.

Townsville city councillor Dale Last is concerned about what he says is a three-week lag period between infection and detection and warns the situation could get worse quickly.

He says dengue eradication crews have discovered several mosquito breeding sites at homes around Townsville.

"They're actually finding evidence of the aedes aegypti or dengue mosquito breeding in a lot of these residences," he said.
