Dengue fever in Mekong Delta province increases by ten times

CA MAU ? The number of dengue fever cases in the southernmost province of Ca Mau so far this year is almost 10 times higher than for the same period last year, according to the provincial Health Department.

The peak time for the disease in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta?s province began in June and the situation continues to worsen.

Deputy head of the department?s Prevention and Treatment Division, Huynh Tan Kiet, said the disease had struck 3,550 people by the end of last week. Six people had died so far.

"Only 390 people were infected by dengue fever, including one death, in the same period last year," said Kiet.

The doctor said heavy rain, which created favourable conditions for mosquitoes, was the main reason for the severe outbreak.

"This year also marks the return of the dengue-fever outbreak period, which happens every four years," he said.

Local underestimation of disease prevention is also blamed for the spread of the disease. Although provincial healthcare officials predicted the return of the disease and adopted preventive measures, the situation seems to be out of control, said Kiet.

The department had tried to kill mosquitoes, the disease vectors, by chemicals and other methods, asked communities to keep the environment dry and clean, enhance the capacity of healthcare centres and organised a disease surveillance system from grassroots to provincial level.

However, all hospitals from provincial to district levels are now overloaded with dengue fever patients, said Kiet.

He said the disease was forecast to die down in October or November this year

Dengue fever influx in HCMC, Mekong Delta

According to a Health Ministry report, nearly 36,900 people across the country have been infected with the mosquito-borne disease so far this year, 24 percent down from the same period last year.

Of those infected this year, 33 have died.

The ministry said that southern provinces and cities have been hardest-hit accounting for 80-85 percent of reported cases.

HCMC has reported the highest number of dengue cases, with more than 6,100 patients infected so far this year, followed by Ca Mau, Soc Trang and Tien Giang provinces.

The HCMC-based Pediatrics Hospital No. 2 said Tuesday that about 80 dengue fever patients, mostly aged between 5 and 10, were being treated at the hospital.

Le Hoang Son, director of Can Tho City Pediatrics Hospital, said 40 children had been admitted with the disease.

Son said 30 percent of the children were from Can Tho while the rest were from neighboring provinces in the Mekong Delta region.

Last month, a large number of dengue fever cases caused several hospitals in the Mekong Delta region to become overloaded.

The Children?s Emergency Department at Ca Mau General Hospital and Soc Trang General Hospital?s Children?s Department struggled to cope with the influx of dengue patients.

In the northern city of Hanoi, more than 222 people have been infected with dengue fever so far this year, a 21 percent year-on-year decrease.

Dang Thi Kim Hanh, a secretary for Hanoi?s Dengue Fever Control and Prevention Program, said that as more rain is expected over the next three months, the weather will be conducive to the breeding of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes ? the vector by which dengue is spread.

The use of mosquito repellent may kill mature mosquitoes, but Hanh warns that mosquito eggs remain a problem and says that eliminating the larvae should be part of the effort to control the disease.

Nguyen Trung Nghia, director of the Can Tho City Preventive Health Center, said the city and Mekong Delta provinces were mobilizing local families to breed guppies to help eliminate mosquito larvae.

The guppies ? which feed on the larvae ? can be bred in open water areas, which make ideal breeding grounds for dengue mosquitoes.

In Ben Tre Province, authorities have provided residents in dengue-hit areas with more than 50,000 guppies over the past seven months.

VietNamNet Bridge - There has been an outbreak of dengue fever in Ho Chi Minh City and in the Mekong Delta. Experts warned that this year is the peak of the disease. Eighty to 85 percent of reported cases are in the south.

There have been 33 fatalities among the 37,000 people who have been infected with the mosquito-borne disease so far this year, according to the Ministry of Health.

The south is the hardest-hit region, accounting for 80-85 percent of reported cases. Ho Chi Minh City has 6,200 patients. The Mekong Delta provinces of Ca Mau, Soc Trang, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Kien Giang, and Bac Lieu have also been hit.

The Infection Department of the HCMC-based Children Hospital 2 admitted 126 patients, including 80 dengue fever victims, on Tuesday. The hospital has also admitted 27 patients from various parts of the country.

Children between 5 to 10 years old are the most vulnerable to the disease. Fourteen neonatal babies suffer from this dangerous condition. Two of them, Nguyen Phuong Huy, six months old and Nguyen Phung Tien, eight months old and both from District 9, had narrowly escaped death, said Dr. Tran Thi Thuy, deputy head of the department.

There is no more room for dengue fever patients and the departments 40 beds are full, said Mr. Le Hoang Son, director of the Can Tho City Pediatrics Hospital.

The Districts of Tran Van Thoi, Thoi Binh, U Minh, Nam Can in the southern province of Ca Mau in July announced that they were experiencing a dengue fever epidemic and were struggling to cope with an influx of dengue patients.

In Ha Noi, 222 people have been infected with dengue fever so far this year. Some districts in Ha Noi have many mosquitos, including Thanh Tri, Thanh Xuan, Hoang Mai and Tu Liem.

Dang Thi Kim Hanh, a secretary at the Ha Noi?s Dengue Fever Control and Prevention Program, said that the weather will be humid in three next months. September to November and rainy season is conducive to the breeding of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which carries the germ to human.

The ministry?s doctors and epidemic experts toured to Binh Duong and Binh Phuoc provinces on Tuesday to check dengue fever task in the two provinces.

The medical sector tries its best in a bid to control the disease, said Dr. Nguyen Thanh Dan, director of the Medicine Preventative Department in Ca Mau. Dr. Nguyen Trung Nghia in Can Tho reported that his city provided residents with feed for a million fish to eat mosquito larva.

Nearly 8,000 dengue fever cases recorded in HCMC

Nearly 8,000 people in Ho Chi Minh City have been treated for dengue fever in local hospitals in the first eight months of the year, according to the HCMC Preventive Health Center.

In August alone, more than 1,800 people were diagnosed with the fever, a year-on-year increase of 60 percent, the center said.

The number of dengue fever cases is increasing because district authorities have not taken drastic action needed to prevent the occurrence and spread of the disease, the center reported.
