Cholera Response
? The Katanga Province is experiencing a slight decrease in cholera cases. At Week 39 ( end of September) , only
three ZS reported cases , namely ZS Kalemie (20 cases) , Nyemba (23 cases) and Pweto ( 4 cases). This makes a total of 11 438 cases of cholera with 263 deaths recorded since the
early 2013. Meanwhile , the partners continue the prevention and management
load on the ground. By cons , in other riparian areas as Malemba Nkulu , no
provision is made for pre-positioning inputs fight against this epidemic , before the season
rainy . The ZS currently only has nearly 2000 liters of Ringer ( donation
provincial government ) , insufficient to deal with the epidemic in four of the ZS
territory.
? Alima has just completed its surveillance and response against cholera in the District
health Likasi and Territory Bukama . Both projects were funded by the United Nations Population Fund
UN Children's Fund ( UNICEF) .
The same NGO is preparing to launch another project " Emergency response health and water, sanitation and
sanitation "RUSH" . The ECHO project will take into account the epidemics of cholera, measles
and malaria. For now, an investigation is being conducted by the NGO and part
government to identify priority areas of intervention as needed .
health
?
The ZS Malemba Nkulu has been declared an epidemic of measles . Of the 25 samples sent
the National Institute of Research biom?diclaes ( INRB ) in Kinshasa , five were found to be positive . what
brings to eight the number of ZS where the epidemic is already confirmed in Katanga ( Kalemie Kansimba ,
Kashobwe , Kilwa , Malemba Nkulu Moba Sakania and Songa ) . At the national level , Katanga is not
yet included in the national strategy against measles which concerns only
Ecuador and the Eastern Province. But at the local level , UNICEF continues to support some ZS
( Kashobwe , Kilwa and Sakania ) . Hope In Action continues investigations into the epidemic
Kashobwe .
Since the beginning of the year until September 30 , 5476 suspected cases of measles , 79
deaths were reported in the province , a lethality of 1.4%.
? Doctors Without Borders (MSF) organized response in the ZS Kabalo and Kansimba in
Tanganyika. Another response is to start in the ZS Kirungu where nearly 30,000 children
6 months to 15 years were vaccinated there one week. According to MSF , the ZS Kansimba and Moba will
taken into account by December 2013 .
? The Territory Kalemie has not received a response to the epidemic since 2012 . According to the
Provincial Health Division (SPD ) , more than 80 % of measles cases that registers Kalemie
come from the area of Health Luanika , where the majority of the population is essentially made
Pygmies .
