Kinshasa, DR Congo - Four hundreds cases of cholera, resulting in dozens of deaths, have been reported in several communities on the province of South Kivu, east of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Congolese News Agency reporte d Thursday.

According to the agency, close to 300 cases, including many fatalities, were reported on the Shabunda territory alone whereas in the Fizi territory, the number of affected people, initially estimated at 98, has been reduced to 38 following the intervention of NGOs Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and Oxfam Great Britain.

The outbreak followed the lack of a drinking water supply system, infrastructures that are obsolete or destroyed during the armed conflict that split the region over 15 years, according to the Congolese Health Ministry.

The forum called for a national and international assistance to rehabilitate sources of water supply.
