Delhi doctors list health hazards of Lindane insecticide in Yamuna

The Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) discovery of Lindane insecticide in the Yamuna has set alarm bells ringing for doctors.

"Lindane poisoning is a cause of concern. Though not life-threatening, its long-term effects are not known properly. There is an urgent need to find out the levels of toxicity in the population of Delhi," Dr Anoop Misra, director, centre of internal medicine at Fortis Hospital, said.

In cases of ingestion of the pesticide, nervous system failure was observed, he added. "The long-term effects may be thyroid dysfunction, coma, diarrhoea and other morbidities," he said.

City dentists claim that the growing cases of cleft lip and cleft palate in babies may also be attributed to pesticide poisoning.

"Any kind of insecticide poisoning can cause congenital defects or brain impairment in foetuses. Such cases are increasing," Dr Anil Kumar Chandna, vice-president of the Delhi Dental Council, said...
