New Delhi, Aug 7 (IANS) Three Delhi doctors tested positive for influenza A(H1N1) Friday and have been quarantined in a designated hospitals, a health official said.

?Three doctors have tested positive for swine flu today,? Delhi Health Secretary J.P. Singh told IANS Friday.

He said that Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia had said that ?all hospitals under the Delhi government will screen and counsel swine flu patients, but whether they are to be quarantined will depend on the doctor?.

Walia held a meeting with her ministry officials and asked them to follow the guidelines issued by the union health ministry.

According to Walia, there are 31 swine flu patients in Delhi currently. Of these, 20 are admitted to various hospitals across the city while the remaining 11 are quarantined at home.

Meanwhile, a Class 6 student of Sanskriti School who was suspected to be down with swine flu Thursday evening tested negative for the disease Friday after her samples were sent to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD).

Anjali Bali, a teacher of the school, said: ?On Thursday a student was suspected to have contracted swine flu. In the evening the child was said to have tested positive, therefore the school decided to remain closed today as a precautionary measure.?

?We had got in touch with students and parents immediately and told them about the school?s decision,? she added.

?However, after the student?s sample was tested negative at the NICD we are now re-opening on Monday,? Bali, a member of the school?s Parents-Teachers Association (PTA), told IANS.

Abha Sehgal, principal of the school, said that after the swine flu scare the school was immediately sanitised.

?We informed the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) about the suspected swine flu case and they took prompt action in sanitising the school,? Sehgal said.

NEW DELHI: Three doctors and one IIT student were among the 28 new cases of H1N1 influenza to be confirmed in the capital on Friday. The three are
from Safdarjung Hospital, CGHS dispensary in Timarpur and a private hospital.

All the three are presently in home quarantine. It is not yet established from where they contracted the infection. "Two doctors are from Safdarjung and CGHS dispensary, which are not designated centres for H1N1 influenza. We don't know from where did they contract the flu,'' said Delhi's health minister Kiran Walia.

Considering the risk they face, medical professionals, including doctors, nurses and other staff looking after swine flu cases, are put on chemoprophylactic treatment and it is mandatory for them to take tamiflu. "The staff posted in wards have to take one tablet for six weeks as a precautionary measure,'' said Dr SK Sharma, CMO, RML Hospital.

"All the 28 positive cases have contracted the infection from those who have tested positive earlier. One of the two friends of the IIT-Delhi student, who was diagnosed with swine flu on Wednesday, tested positive on Friday and is admitted at Malviya Nagar Hospital,'' said Kiran Walia.

Five students from Mothers' International, CRP School in Prashant Vihar, Modern School and DPS Mathura Road are admitted at various government hospitals.

Now, there are 14 designated screening centres with Delhi government starting the facility at 10 of its hospitals on Friday. Close to 800 people got themselves checked. There was a mad rush at Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital's H1N1 screening centre and till evening, the hospital had screened 335 people but samples of just 82 patients were taken and five were admitted. "Those who have mild cough and cold are also turning up at the centre. What they don't realise is that they might be just exposing themselves to the infection, as some serious suspected cases are visiting the facility,'' said Dr Sharma.

Similarly, close to 500 people were screened at all the designated Delhi government hospitals but samples of less than 50 were taken. For instance, Pt Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital screened 94 cases of which 86 were asymptomatic. "A large number of cases were of seasonal flu. Most of them had no history of coming in contact with a positive patient or of travel to any affected country,'' said the minister.

More Delhi doctors show primary symptoms of H1N1

As the doctors involved in handling swine flu patients were getting infected with the disease, the fraternity has questioned the quality of surgical kits used by the medical staff as a preventive measure against the ?epidemic?. Chief Medical Superintendent of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital SK Sharma and five other doctors have been put on the list of patients suspected with the infection. The doctors have shown the primary symptoms of the disease and their samples have been sent for test.

Meanwhile, 39 patients were admitted in the Capital hospitals on Saturday, of which 23 cases were found positive and test results of 16 are awaited. One person from Sanskriti School tested positive while another case tested negative.
