During MMWR Week 42, there were five laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza reported among Delaware residents, bringing
the total to 15 for the 2018-2019 season. Reports of influenza-like illness (ILI) received from participating providers, facilities and
institutions in Delaware show ILI is 0.11% compared with Delaware?s 2018-2019 baseline of 2.0%. Nationally, ILI is 1.5%, below

First flu deaths of season reported in Delaware

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Public health officials are reporting the first flu-related deaths in Delaware in the 2018-2019 flu season.

Authorities said Wednesday that a 65-year-old man who was infected with Influenza A died last week, making him the first flu fatality. Officials say a 73-year-old man and a 77-year-old woman also died within the past few days after being infected with Influenza A.

All three individuals were residents of Sussex County and had underlying health conditions.

Two more Delawareans died from the flu during the weekend, bringing this season's total to five people, health officials said Monday.

The most recent deaths include a 51-year-old Kent County woman and a 55-year-old New Castle County woman, said Jennifer Brestel, a spokeswoman with the Division of Public Health. Both were infected with Influenza A and both had underlying health conditions.

As of Dec. 29, 687 people have been confirmed with the flu, though health officials believe the number is likely higher. There have been 118 hospitalizations.

Three more Delawareans have died from the flu this month, increasing the death toll to eight people this season, health officials said Thursday.

All eight residents, whose ages range from 41 to 83, were infected with the Influenza A strain and likely had underlying health conditions, state health officials said. The most recent death occurred this week in an 83-year-old man from New Castle County.

Last week, a 41-year-old New Castle County woman and a 74-year-old Sussex County woman died from complications stemming from the flu, officials said.

A 53-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman have died of the flu in Delaware, bringing this season's death toll to 13 people, health officials said Monday.

Both residents lived in Kent County and had underlying health conditions. The man died earlier this month while the woman died last week. Everyone who died of the flu this season had been infected with influenza A.

A 68-year-old Sussex County woman and an 85-year-old New Castle County man died of the flu last week, increasing the total number of influenza deaths to 15 people this season, health officials said.

Like the other Delawareans who died, these residents had underlying health conditions and were infected with the influenza A strain, health officials said.
