Deadly malarial strain reported
15 Sep 2008, 0425 hrs IST, Priya Yadav,TNN

CHANDIGARH: Health authorities in Haryana are on their toes after over 100 cases of deadly plasmodium falciparum malaria have been reported from a pocket in Yamunanagar.

The disease, the most deadly form of malaria which can lead to fatal cerebral malaria if left untreated, has prodded the authorities into launching a mass radical treatment (MRT) in the district.

Alarmed at the situation threatening to spiral out of control, additional aid is being rushed to the districts both in terms of money and manpower, to take necessary steps to control malaria which should have been taken long ago, sources said.

DGHS, Avinash Sharma, told the TOI, ??Health workers involved in pulse polio campaign, which started in parts of the state on Sunday, are being roped in for the MRT project, along with a team of doctors, constituted to execute the project.??

Mass radical treatment is extended to people in extreme conditions when the affected population is administered drugs of high intensity. ??Since the treatment has a variety of side effects, people cannot be simply given medicine and told to go home. They have to be monitored continuously and their side effects also controlled,?? Sharma informed the TOI.

This is not the first time in this season that cases of malaria falciparum have been reported. About 400 cases of plasmodium falciparum were reported from Karnal through the season.

??But these were scattered across the district and no MRT was required unlike this time when a large number of people from a small pocket have been reported with the disease,?? said Sharma.]

Teams from National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme along with National Institute of Virology have visited the dengue and malaria affected districts, including Gurgaon which has reported nearly 400 cases of dengue. ??Karnal and Yamunanagar are our concern areas as far as malaria is concerned,?? said a senior official of the health department.
??An additional aid of Rs 1 lakh is being rushed to the districts,?? added he.
