Deadly bird flu strain found in Germany

Re: Deadly bird flu strain found in Germany

Bird flu: Friedrich Loeffler Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut changes new finds of H5N1 bird flu virus for evaluation increases clearly the risk for bringing in into utilizable poultry existence (island Riems) - the finds of infected game birds in now four Lands of the Federal Republic cause Friedrich Loeffler Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI), to evaluate the risk evaluation of a bringing in of hochpathogenem aviaerem Influenzavirus H5N1 ("bird flu") into utilizable poultry existence in Germany again as "highly". Infections of game birds with bird flu virus of the type H5N1 were announced also from the Czech republic and from France. "the exact geographical propagation of the virus cannot be measured at present", so Professor Thomas Mettenleiter, president of the FLI. The scientists of the institute proceed from a local epidemic happening with game birds at artificial lake the Kelbra at the border from Thuringia to Saxonia-Anhalt. On the Saxonia anhaltinischen side over 100 dead game birds were found, the national investigation laboratory tightened so far with 39 black and hood divers an infection with H5N1-Virus. Of it 13 samples went to the reference laboratory for aviaere influenza at Friedrich Loeffler Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, who confirmed Wednesday evening an infection with hochpathogenem H5N1 type Asia. The large number at infected animals refers to an accordingly high infection pressure in the game bird population locally. Although momentarily no classical migratory bird activities take place, the virus can be quite spread over shorter distances by game birds. Some kinds of game bird accomplish for example Mauserzuege so mentioned, with which the animals in certain areas collect themselves, which offer protection from Fressfeinden to them. The complete risk evaluation and the current report on the situation are subordinate in the InterNet shortly; for the order. Re: Deadly bird flu strain found in Germany

published of: Ralf Julke on Wednesday, 11 July 2007 Conclusion. Out. Past with the pleasure in the country. Leipzig officially registered 8,205 chickens, pheasants, quails, house ducks and geese must from now on inside remain in house, stable and voliere. The recently determined cases of the game bird poultry plague in Thuringia, Saxonia-Anhalt, in Machern, glad castle and gate gau, in Bavaria, France and the Czech republic are debt. The Leipziger office veterinary surgeon orders: The poultry remains in the stable. The poultry plague suspicion in a utilizable poultry existence in Thuringia encouraged Dr. Wolfgang Paul finally to strict its. That is not actually its kind. "we are also not concerned on the Leipziger territory", say it. however to express "around it once in such a way: We are encircle." In the last year, when the hysteria on ruegen and in Wermsdorf slammed shut, it was still very reserved with its situation estimate, estimated Leipzig as hardly endangers and permitted also the meeting of the largest European poultry gefluegelschau in Leipzig. Happened nothing. But which happens there in July 2007, nevertheless a little brings it from the peace. "we have a new situation in free nature", say it. "now completely new kinds of game bird are concerned, which were so far not affected by the hochpatogenen influenza-virus H5N1, all in front the hood divers." The suspicion confirms itself that the virus settled in the populations of the European water birds. Wildenten became probable in the meantime the carrier of the virus, get sick however more rarely to it, completely similarly swans. Of a "virus reservoir" Dr. Wolfgang Paul and a "virus pressure" speaks, who are present apparently also in the Leipziger environment. - beside the water birds - the house poultry existence are particularly endangered. "nevertheless around it again to say", so Paul. "we do not have a case of poultry plague on our territory." With none of the 2006 in the institute for national investigation examined dead birds from Leipzig the suspicion on bird flu were confirmed. "the people are sensitized", say Paul. to say "around it times in such a way. They announce nearly each dead sparrow to us." In the first half-year 2007 already 500 ended birds of anxious citizens were indicated. With none the virus H5N1 was proven. "nevertheless", so the office veterinary surgeon, "we wappnen ourselves for an emergency. If it happens, we werrden immediately actively." Already during the cases of bird flu of 2006 the veterinary centre in a personalaufwaendigen action had tried to determine all poultry owners in the city. The dark number, so Paul, cannot be any longer all too high. "the people know now that they must announce themselves to us, thus ihnenim emergency to be helped can." 295 poultry owners with evenly those 8,205 counted plumage animals are located now in the lists of the office. If a case of suspicion becomes acute somewhere, the coworkers of the veterinary centre and freiwillige of the technical welfare organization can disengage purposefully and to the emergency also "clubs", which kill animal existence in the 3-Kilometer-Zone. "which we all do not hope, do to have", so Paul. "in no case I will completely make the restricted area if the people for Leipzig to the stable obligation to adhere, might actually nothing pass." The strict adherence to the Aufstallungsgebotes (stops in closed stables) by all poultry owners applies immediately. The veterinarian and food supervisory board of the city Leipzig order for the entire city of Leipzig: 1.Wer of chickens, Truthuehner, perlhuehner, Rebhuehner, pheasants, run birds, quails, ducks or geese (poultry) holds, has these in closed stables to hold or 2.unter of a supernatant to upward hold against entries secured close cover and with a limitation of pages (safety divice), secured against the penetration of game birds. 3. Poultry markets, poultry looking, poultry exhibitions or meetings of similar kind are forbidden up to further. 4. The adherence to this office-veterinary order is controlled in irregular distances. 5.Diese order enters into force with immediate effect.

Re: Deadly bird flu strain found in Germany

Castle country (Hg). No 'all-clear' signal in the district one field south resin regarding the bird flu. Still dead water birds are found. And tests prove that so far 87 animals carry the highly dangerous virus H5N1. Only few kilometers lie between artificial lake the Kelbra and our region. Does the bird flu threaten us? SUPER SUNDAY spoke with the acting land advice Gundram Mock. It confirmed that also in the castle district dead birds were found and returned for testing: two wildenten, rabe, one grab bird and two pigeons. "we proceed however from normal causes of death. All finds were single animals at completely different discovery sites ", rate Gundram Mock. He sees therefore also so far no cause for special measures. Nevertheless the central administrative bodies and offices for order of the municipalities were informed about the correct behaviors and the members of the local crisis centre in the district were activated. In this crisis centre the official veterinary surgeons are among other things merged, who can react to the current development immediately and specify immediately concrete measures. "we make ourselves particularly around our large utilizable animal existence in the district concerns", so the acting land advice. It nevertheless gives in the new district over 430.000 putting hens, cockerels and Puten. Also those owners of poultry represent a problem, which did not announce their existence, although the law prescribes it. They harm themselves in addition, because only registered existence enjoy insurance protection. To arise so long basic RAM Mock a veranlassung for a general stable obligation for poultry does not see no cases of proven game bird poultry plague in the district. Endangered particularly are water birds, because the virus can spread by the way of life and/or kind of food intake particularly well. One should generally keep dogs and cats away caution for the sake of of game birds. If one finds dead birds, one may not touch her under any circumstances with bare hands. Panic is however appropriate, so the acting land advice. Smaller birds and/or those, where a cause of death is clearly recognizable, one with gloves or foil bag can dispose over the domestic refuse. Larger birds, and/or cases where no cause is evident to announce are the central administrative body and/or the office for order. Particularly remarkablenesses like an amassment of dead birds are immediately with the call readiness of the veterinary centre to indicate (directing center, Tel. 03445/ 75290 and/or. 03443/ 302111).

asymptomatic swans ?

asymptomatic swans ?

in Ebeleben area H5N1 was found in 2 dead young swans.
On July 4 it was confirmed by FLI.
The two parent-swans were on the lake since last year,
wintered there and were apparantly healthy.
No H5N1 was found in the male swan but the female swan was
heavily infected. FLI confirmed it on July 11.
Both swans were killed then.
Now FLI sends a biologist to Ebeleben. On another lake there are 5
breeding pairs with young swans.
FLI assumes to find infected animals among those healthy
animals too. The result is available in one week.

Riems sends Biologin Since the outbreak of the poultry plague with game birds around the Kelbraer back-up lake daily dead infected animals were found. Now there were first days without such finds. In the general stable obligation in the Kyffhaeuserkreis however nothing changes. KYFFHAEUSERKREIS (pH). The day before yesterday still another dead black neck diver on Kyffhaeuser side of the Kelbraer of artificial lake was found. The day of yesterday remained again find-free. With 58 black neck divers as well as Blessralle, sea gull and hood diver H5N1 on Thueringer side was proven. In Saxonia anhaltinischem area were positively confirmed 212 black neck divers, Blessralle, two sea gulls, seven hood divers, dwarf divers and board duck. In addition, for Tuesday in the area of the one field south resin circle no dead game birds were discovered more, confirm the there veterinary centre. Two black neck divers, two sea gulls and a duck were Monday the last finds. Sea gull and black neck divers had poultry plague. "it is a good trend that the number of the animals goes back, on the other hand one remains the propagation" spreading beyond the black neck diver, estimates the office veterinary surgeon of the Kyffhaeuserkreises Dr. Gunter wolf and addresses also the zero wind in last days. A change of the stable obligation or the restrictions in restricted areas and observation areas, likewise specified by the federation, cannot give it now. The investigations so long are not locked and/or infected birds were found under no circumstances. Everything applies up to revocation, also to the Ebelebener region. There with two ended Jungschwaenen the game bird poultry plague virus was proven. On 4 July the answer of the Friedrich Loeffler Institut of the island Riems came. The pair of parents killed later, which was for the previous year on the pond, there wintered, exhibited outwardly no disease symptoms. While the male animal did not carry the virus in itself, that was strongly infected apparently just as little ill female animal. The proof of Bundesforschungsinstitut for animal health for this came on 11 July. Now Riems sends a Biologin after Ebeleben. On one the further five ponds are breeding's pairs with young animals. The suspicion continues to exist. "we go to similar virus working group of the seeming also healthy swans of out", thus office veterinary surgeon Dr. Wolf. Next week would come the Forscherin. One try to catch the swans and take living person samples. That is everything but easily and safely. Since the symptom-free animals are possibly Virusausscheider, positive results would give security that the virus continues to strew. While the infected swans whether in the previous year on ruegen or now in Leipzig and also the young animals in Ebeleben "by the dozen" died, did not give it with the latter in Ebeleben disease characters. The results could be present however, after arrival of the samples on Riems, within 48 hours. Today in one week we will have more clarity, so Dr. Wolf. For August, then the first migratory birds draw, seem impossible a loosening of the circle-far stable obligation. On after it gibt's at present no answer. The race poultry breeders in the circle had demanded the abolition of the general stable obligation and to want in the federation judicially also against it to proceed. 27.07.2007

Re: Deadly bird flu strain found in Germany

Dr. Niman

In the last paragraphs of your commentary you say:

"The finding of high levels in an asymptomatic resident swan near Kelbra Lake further supports the establishment of H5N1 in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. This is the first report of H5N1 in an asymptomatic wild bird in western Europe.

H5N1 can infect a wide spectrum of bird species. Introductions into a region are not eliminated by culling of domestic poultry, or departure of long range migratory birds."

Question. Since a large part of our populated world appears to be now peppered with H5N1, it make one a little uneasy. The increased land mass and larger bird populations give the virus more opportunity to change and possible jump species. Can you give us your comments on where we are along the road to the slow train wreck. Is the train speeding speeding up or are we still about the same (slow)???

Even without looking at the genetic evolution, you can get a pretty good idea by just looking at the timeline:

1959 First report of H5N1 - Chicken in Scotland
1996 First report of H5N1 with Asian polybasic cleavage site (Guangdong goose)
1997 First report of H5N1 in humans - Hong Kong 6/16 die
2003 First report of H5N1 in human in China (Beijing 24M fatality)
2004 First report of H5N1 in humans outside of China (Vietnam & Thailand - Clade 1)
2005 First report of H5N1 in humans in Cambodia & Indonesia (Clade 2.1)
2005 First report of H5N1 Qinghai strain in birds (Clade 2.2)
2005 First report of H5N1 west of China- all Clade 2.2 (Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Astrakhan, Romania, Ukraine, Turkey).
2006 First report of H5N1 in humans west of China - Clade 2.2 (Turkey, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Djibouti).
2006 First report of H5N1 massive expansion - all clade 2.2 (about 50 countries in Europe, Middle East, Africa, south Asia). HIGHLY suspect on Prince Edward Island in Canada
2007 First report of H5N1 in human in west Africa - Clade 2.2 (Nigeria)
2007 Qinghai strain (clade 2.2) first reported in South Korea, Japan, Bangladesh, Ghana, Togo as well as large summer outbreak in western Europe - primarily Germany and now India
Fall 2007 - much more to come (including clade 2.2)

Re: Deadly bird flu strain found in Germany

maybe we should wait for a statement from FLI.
It could still be that the swan was just infected some days ago
and the symptoms hadn't yet started. Also they killed the swan later,
would they have done that if it had remained asymptomatic ?
That were a great opportunity to observe it, how long it stays
asymptomatic.
