Dead swan in western Japan found to be infected with avian flu

November 9, 2017 (Mainichi Japan)

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The Environment Ministry said Thursday a dead wild swan found at a western Japan lake was infected with a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, confirming it as the first bird flu case in the country this season.

A detailed examination conducted at Tottori University determined the presence of the H5N6 influenza strain, which has caused severe outbreaks in Japan and Asia in the past, according to the ministry.

The dead mute swan was discovered near Lake Shinji in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, on Sunday and it tested positive for bird flu in a simple test carried out by the prefectural government.

On 5th November 2017, one Cygnus olor (mute swan) was found dead in Matsue-shi and the sample derived from it was tested positive for influenza A virus by antigen-capture kit. On 9th November 2017, the sample was confirmed positive for H5N6 subtype influenza A virus. Enhanced monitoring of wild birds is ongoing within a ten-kilometer radius of the site. Interviews and on-sight inspection were carried out on poultry farms in the ten kilometer area and no abnormality was found.
