Dead hens spread panic</ARTTITLE>

VADODARA: Threat of bird flu spread like wildfire in Anand district on Wednesday, when around 2,000 hens were found dead near Vera village in Khambolaj taluka of Anand district. While the dead hens were found from a dumpyard near a lake in the village, word spread that the hens might have died due to bird flu.
By Wednesday afternoon, rumours had spread that around 12,000 dead hens had been dumped near the village. However, later in the day, officials said that the gram panchayat had reported around 2,000 dead hens at the dumpyard.
District authorities said that there was no reason to believe that the hens had died of bird flu or any other such disease. On noticing the dumped hens, gram panchayat sarpanch of Vera submitted a written application to Khambolaj police station stating that some unidentified persons had dumped the hens, which had raised a stink across the village.
District development officer (DDO) G S Bokhani, later in the day, informed TOI that they had sent some officers to collect samples. He added that earlier too, some poultry farm owner had been dumping feathers and remains of hens in the area. "We are however taking all precautionary measures," he said.
"The samples have been collected as a precautionary measure and the dead hens have been disposed of after conducting a proper 'panchnama'. But it seems that the hens have died because of the summer heat and some poultry farm owner might have dumped the remains," said Bokhani.
Animal husbandry secretary D K Rao added, "The birds were disposed of using the JCB machine.
