The American Geophysical Union (AGU) warned that changes to the Earth's climate system were "not natural".
Changes in temperature, sea level and rainfall were best explained by the increased concentration of greenhouse gases from human activities, it added.
The union called for carbon emissions to be cut by more than 50% by 2100. <!-- E SF -->
It is the first time the AGU has updated its policy position on climate change since 2003, when it called for a concerted worldwide study to understand how the Earth would change as a result of climate change.
'Tough challenge'
The revised statement has gone further, stating that the changes to the planet's climate system were "best explained by the increased atmospheric abundances of greenhouse gases and aerosols generated by human activities in the 20th Century".

The AGU Council, which adopted the updated position, said that a sustained research effort involving many of its members had strengthened the scientific understanding of the impacts of climate change.
It warned that the world faced a tough challenge over the coming 50 years: "Even the lower limit of impending climate change - an additional global mean warming of 1.0C (1.8F) above the last decade - is far beyond the range of climate variability experienced during the past 1,000 years.
"Warming greater than 2.0C (3.6F) above 19th Century levels is projected to be disruptive, reducing global agricultural productivity, causing widespread loss of biodiversity, and - if sustained over centuries - melting of much of the Greenland ice sheet."
If the 2C rise was to be avoided, the AGU said, net annual emissions of carbon dioxide had to be cut by at least 50% by the end of the century.
It acknowledged that, as with most projections, there was a degree of uncertainty but that it was highly unlikely that the impacts would be "inconsequential".

"This is a fast-moving field of science and the AGU felt it was time to update the statement," AGU president, Tim Killeen, told BBC News.
"We took seven months to do it; we brought together a panel of experts, who created drafts which underwent extensive critical review, and it was formally approved by the elected Council in December."
Although the statement is consistent with previous positions adopted by the AGU, Professor Killeen said it differed in a number of ways.
"There are fewer caveats that might have appeared in previous statements," he explained.
"It is more of a declarative statement that the climate is changing and those changes are best explained by human effects due to greenhouse gases and aerosols."
"Secondly, rather than the AGU saying that this is important and should be looked at, I think this is a call that we need to do something about it."
In 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published its Fourth Assessment Report, which said changes to the climate were "very likely" the result of human activity. The IPCC also warned that the cost of acting now to reduce emissions would be far less than having to adapt to the future consequences of climate change. The AGU, which has 50,000 members in 137 countries, said delivering solutions would require the co-operation of all sectors; from science and technology, to industry and government. <!-- E BO -->

Tibet’s Temperature Story

Hardly a week goes by without some story hitting the news about global warming and retreating glaciers, and for whatever reason, retreating glaciers in the Himalayan region get more than their fair share of coverage. The recent death of Sir Edmund Hillary served to further focus attention on this part of the world.
There are absolutely countless websites on the subject, and one of the first you will encounter for a “Global Warming Himalayan” search shows the map below (Figure1) from www.climatehotmap.org with tabs than can bring you all the news from the region.

Here are a few examples of what you will find behind the numberd tabs:
1. Llasa, Tibet — Warmest June on record, 1998. Temperatures hovered above 77°F for 23 days.
59. Garhwal Himalayas, India — Glacial retreat at record pace. The Dokriani Barnak Glacier retreated 66 ft (20.1 m) in 1998 despite a severe winter. The Gangorti Glacier is retreating 98 ft (30 m) per year. At this rate scientists predict the loss of all central and eastern Himalayan glaciers by 2035.
91. Nepal - High rate of temperature rise. Since the mid-1970s the average air temperature measured at 49 stations has risen by 1.8°F (1°C), with high elevation sites warming the most. This is twice as fast as the 1°F (0.6°C) average warming for the mid-latitudinal Northern Hemisphere (24 to 40°N) over the same time period, and illustrates the high sensitivity of mountain regions to climate change.
95. Tibet - Warmest decade in 1,000 years. Ice core records from the Dasuopu Glacier indicate that the last decade and last 50 years have been the warmest in 1,000 years. Meteorological records for the Tibetan Plateau show that annual temperatures increased 0.4°F (0.16°C) per decade and winter temperatures increased 0.6°F (0.32°C) per decade from 1955 to 1996.
126. Bhutan - Melting glaciers swelling lakes. As Himalayan glaciers melt glacial lakes are swelling and in danger of catastrophic flooding. Average glacial retreat in Bhutan is 100-130 feet (30-40 m) per year. Temperatures in the high Himalayas have risen 1.8°F (1°C) since the mid 1970s.
127. India - Himalayan glaciers retreating. Glaciers in the Himalayas are retreating at an average rate of 50 feet (15 m) per year, consistent with the rapid warming recorded at Himalayan climate stations since the 1970s. Winter stream flow for the Baspa glacier basin has increased 75% since 1966 and local winter temperatures have warmed, suggesting increased glacier melting in winter.
130. Mt. Everest - Retreating glacier. The Khumbu Glacier, popular climbing route to the summit of Mt. Everest, has retreated over 3 miles (5 km) since 1953. The Himalayan region overall has warmed by about 1.8°F (1°C) since the 1970s.
Very interesting and potentially effective to say the least, but an article forthcoming in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Theoretical and Applied Climatology tells a very different story – and a story that will not be featured anywhere but World Climate Report. The research was conducted by scientists from various Chinese institutions, Columbia University, and the University of Delaware; the work was funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China.
The Gou et al. team took 139 tree ring cores from 97 trees located in the valley of Qiemuqu in the Animagin Mountains in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau; you all realize from your geography classes that this valley produces a major headwater tributary of the Yellow River. They found that the tree ring widths were very highly correlated with summer maximum air temperatures in the region (the trees love cool summers), and this allowed for a surprisingly accurate way to reconstruct temperatures back 700 years. A bit of statistical wizardry was then applied to produce Figure 2 below.

In their own words, Gou et al. observe “The ten-year average summer half-year maximum temperature in the 1990s is relatively high, but it is still colder than several other periods, including 1480s–1490s and 1590s–1600s. The 1480s is the warmest period in the past 700 years. The summer half-year maximum temperature can change significantly within decades.”
Even more amazing, with respect to all the material we see on the internet is their finding that “There is no warming trend for the reconstructed summer half-year maximum temperature since the Industrial Revolution in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau.” Further, we learn “The summer half-year maximum temperature in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau has increased since the 1980s, but it is not exceptional on centennial or millennial timescales. The ten-year average summer half-year maximum temperature in the 1990s was relatively high, but was still colder than several other periods.” You undoubtedly see now why this article will be immediately dismissed by the global warming crusade.
We will leave you with this exact quote, because it speaks volumes as they so clearly state
“There is no warming trend since the Industrial Revolution, in fact, the linear trend is negative.”

I see that the graph stops at the year 2000 with an increased frequency of temperature highs occurring. Since this is now 2008, there is at least 1/2 a decade of trend analysis that could be evaluated. A linear progression to 2005 would potentially give a more current picture ala Gore.

Is it my squinting eyes, or are the declines steeper (over less number of years) than the inclines?

Perhaps the tree rings were thinner (indicating lower temps) due to lack of water in the valley. Or perhaps the valley flooded when the glaciers melted too much. Perhaps a cycle of pestulence inhibits the trees' growth.

I wonder how much research effort has been devoted to tree ring climatology.

Of course the data stops in 2000 - they were likely clear-cut to make luxury flooring.

Summary Three cypress (Juniperus przewalski Kom.) tree ring width chronologies were established based on tree ring cores collected at elevations ranging from 3,550?3,700 m a.s.l. in the headwaters of the Yellow River, Animaqin Mountains, in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. Statistical analysis showed that the chronologies were negatively correlated to the summer half-year (April to September) maximum air temperature (p < 0.01). The maximum temperature of the summer half-year was reconstructed for the past 700 years based on the developed chronologies. The reconstruction explains 47% of the maximum temperature variance which occurred during the period with meteorological observations (1959?2001). Both cold and warm periods were evident in the reconstructed summer half-year maximum temperature record over the past 700 years. The summer half-year maximum temperature has increased since the 1980s, and the decade 1980 to 1990 is ranked as one of the fastest warming decades on record, however this is not exceptional on centennial or millennial timescales. The ten-year average summer half-year maximum temperature in the 1990s is relatively high, but it is still colder than several other periods, including 1480s?1490s and 1590s?1600s. The 1480s is the warmest period in the past 700 years. The summer half-year maximum temperature can change significantly within decades. From 1490s to 1500s, the temperature dropped 0.89 ?C. In the northeastern region of the Tibetan Plateau, warmer periods are often accompanied by drought whereas cold periods are coincident with above average precipitation.

Thank you for pointing that out. The "debate may be over" with respect to climate change in some people's minds. Fortunately, it is not over with respect to the continuance of scientific research. The questions are too important to ignore given the implications. One thing we should all agree on is the need for a cleaner and healthier environment.

Boy, some skeptic folks will not beleave that it happens even if somebody stick a finger in their eyes:
THE GLACIERS ARE MELTING AT AN EXPONENTIAL RATE!

Start to believe to your eyes first, than to other explanations.
