Shigella outbreak prompts fears for upcoming festival

Fifteen confirmed cases of Shigella have been reported in Daviess County, Ky., double the number from last week, according to state health department officials.

Health officials are concerned about the potential spread of bacteria at the upcoming International Bar-B-Q Festival this weekend, which draws approximately 85,000 tourists to Kentucky to taste a variety of barbecued meats and partake in activities such as square dancing. To ensure good health, officials are warning festival goers and vendors to practice good hygiene...

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) - There are now 64 confirmed cases of shigella in Daviess County and health department officials are asking people to practice good hygiene this summer...

...Out of the 64 confirmed cases, 56 of these have been in children under the age of 13 and 8 have been adults. There have been 3 hospitalizations related to this outbreak...

OWENSBORO, Ky. (AP) State health official say three children were hospitalized in western Kentucky in an unusually large outbreak of a bacterial infection that causes watery diarrhea and spreads easily.

Janie Cambron, regional epidemiologist for the Green River District Health Department, said Wednesday the children have since been released after contracting shigella, a bacterial infection spread through just a tiny amount of infected fecal matter.

Cambron says there were 80 reported cases of the disease as of Friday in Daviess County, and three in adjacent Ohio County...

Shigella spreading in Daviess County

DAVIESS COUNTY, KY (WFIE) - The number of confirmed cases of shigella is climbing in Daviess County and the infection is now spreading to other parts of Western Kentucky.

Health officials say over 80 cases have been confirmed in Daviess County and three more in Ohio County and those numbers are expected to climb.

So far three people have been hospitalized during this outbreak and health officials say it's becoming a community wide problem.

Even now that school is out of session, health officials say children are still at risk for contracting shigella...
