The strain of equine encephalitis outbreak that has spread in the
eastern sector of the country has a fatality rate of 65% in humans and up
90% in horses according to preliminary reports, warned the
Health authorities in making a fervent appeal to Panamanians
to extreme health measures to prevent disease
progress.
The disease is transmitted to humans through the bite of
_Culex_ mosquito and affects mostly children and adolescents
around 15 years old, said the Ministry of Health.
The country has no new cases have been detected in people from
last week when he totaled five affected children,
including the death of a child. But new infections among horse
increased to 68 cases, of which 45 have died, said the most
recent Health Ministry report issued Thursday.
Preliminary results issued by the Memorial Institute
Gorgas (ICG), supported by the Center for Disease Research
