Dallas County publicizes 4th flu-related death in recent weeks

It is not clear from the scant details released so far whether the person had underlying health problems that were exacerbated by the flu; or whether the strain involved was swine flu.

Because in most case people aren't being specifically tested for swine flu, health experts have said the most prudent course is to treat all cases of influenza as if they might be the swine variety.

On Monday, county health officials announced the death of an 11-year-old girl who had contracted swine flu. She was Cynthia Garcia of Garland, a sixth-grader at Price Elementary School in the Mesquite school district.

Her case was thought to be exceptional because she had no previous underlying medical condition, authorities said.

In August, the swine flu claimed the life of a 37-year-old man and 52-year-old woman. Both patients had underlying medical issues.

Dr. Wendy Chung, the county's chief epidemiologist, noted that children die of seasonal flu every year. There were 11 such deaths in Texas in 2008-09 and nine the year before.

A 3-year-old girl with underlying medical conditions died this morning, and Dallas County health officials were working to confirm the cause of death but said it may have been caused by swine flu.

The girl was taken this morning to a hospital where she died. Health officials declined to provide additional details about the girl's location but said she did not attend day care.

Toddler Dies After Contracting Swine Flu

A 3-year-old Dallas County resident who died Thursday morning was infected with the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, Dallas County Health and Human Services officials confirmed.

The child had underlying medical conditions, including neurological and chronic lung disease, officials said.

The department did not release additional identifying information for medical confidentiality and privacy reasons.

The death marks the county?s fourth confirmed swine-flu-related death this season.

A sixth-grade student at Vernon Price Elementary in Mesquite died at a hospital Sunday. She didn't have any underlying medical conditions, but had also been diagnosed with a bacterial infection and pneumonia.

The first two swine-flu related deaths involved adults who had underlying medical conditions. One was a 52-year-old woman who died on Aug. 27, and the other was a 37-year-old man who died on Sept. 4.

Texas has had four confirmed swine flu deaths of people younger than age 18, Dallas County Health officials said.

During the last flu season, there were 11 pediatric flu deaths in Texas. Out of those deaths, two occurred in Dallas County.
