I'm not sure the red statement below isn't a translation error - but I can't find the original Arabic article - has it been retracted?

Egyptian officials on Saturday announced the death of three Daqahlia Governorate residents by swine and bird flu infection.

A Ministry of Health statement claimed two of the cases were H1N1, commonly known as “swine flu," with one H5N1, dubbed "bird flu," case. The ages of the victims ranged between 44-50 years old.

Meanwhile, hospitals in five different provinces throughout Egypt--Gharbiya, Sharqiya, Daqahlia, Ismailia, and Fayoum--on Saturday reportedly received 43 suspected flu cases. Laboratory results suggested 15 of them as H1N1 positive, with 19 others suspected of carrying the virus.

Three were announced H5N1 positive, with six others diagnosed in rudimentary stages of infection.

Twall has found a similar article suspecting six H1N1 cases in Daqahlia - perhaps the English edition used the wrong flu?

yes its very time consuming to trying to vet each article on a word by word basis.

its worth mentioning that quite a few of the performed test are coming up negative for H1N1 with the first pass,it could be they are assuming the worst and electing to treat these cases as if its a h5n1 infection until its either proved or disproved.

I wish Al-Youm would (in Arabic) stop using phrases like "swine flu", "bird flu", "emerging bird flu", "bird flu in pigs", "bird and pig flu", etc. If it is H5N1, say "H5N1". If it's H1N1, say "H1N1".

The terms "H1N1" and "H5N1" have no ambiguity in this situation and would be much clearer than the above terms.

It is not uncommon for media reports to provide a general summary at the end of the article that can be cut by editors if necessary.The three positive cases may refer to #113, #114, and #115 (from Daqahlia).
