Sixth H1N1-Related Death In Dade County

Though news has dropped off regarding the Swine Flu, the illness continues to affect South Floridians. Tuesday, the Miami-Dade Health Department confirmed the death of a 53-year-old woman-- the sixth person to die from Swine Flu-related symptoms. Overall, as of July 13, there have been 716 confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus and six deaths in Miami-Dade County.
"Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and friends for their loss. We need to continue to follow the recommended precautions to avoid spreading infections," said Dr. Lillian Rivera, Administrator of Miami-Dade County Health Department.
The health department provides several recommendations to the community: avoid close contact with people who are coughing or otherwise appear ill, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, wash hands frequently, and stay home and away from work or school if you have any respiratory illness. Following these precautions will help avoid the spread of infections such as influenza.
The Miami-Dade Health Department strongly cautions that you contact your doctor if you think you may have influenza. It would be important to discuss whether you should visit your doctor's office, an emergency department, or just stay home.
Florida Department of Health Laboratories are receiving samples for analysis from physicians and hospitals.
