Czechs register highest number of TBE cases in EU

Prague, Feb 3 (CTK) - The Czech Republic has comfortably led the EU, in the negative sense of the word, in the portion of tick-borne encephalitis cases in the past decade, Czech expert Rastislav Madar, who attends a two-day conference on encephalitis in Vienna, has told CTK.

A total of 861 people caught the disease in the 10.5-million Czech Republic last year, and five died, Madar, Czech vaccination centres' guarantor, said.

Of all European countries, the situation is worse only in Russia, with a high occurrence of encephalitis mainly in Siberia, he said.
