U.S. Citizen with Suspected Ebola Admitted to Prague Hospital
Prague Morning

On the evening of Friday, May 16, a man showing symptoms of hemorrhagic fever—possibly Ebola or Marburg virus—was transferred from Tábor Hospital to Prague’s Bulovka University Hospital.

According to reports from iDNES.cz and Novinky.cz, the patient was placed in a sealed isolation unit and transported under strict biohazard protocols. Emergency responders from the South Bohemian Region wore full protective suits and arrived at Bulovka around 10 p.m.

The patient, a U.S. citizen born in 1984, had recently returned from the Congo and reportedly went to the hospital on his own after developing symptoms.

Speaking to the press, Eva Stolejda Liebigerová, spokesperson for Bulovka Hospital, added:

“We confirm the admission of a patient with suspected high-risk infection. Laboratory results will be available Saturday morning. For now, we cannot release more details.”..

An American man displaying symptoms consistent with Ebola was transported from Tábor in South Bohemia to Prague’s Bulovka Hospital on Friday evening, prompting a full-scale emergency response from medical and emergency personnel.

According to hospital officials, the patient remains in isolation, and results from laboratory tests are expected Saturday morning. Authorities are not confirming the diagnosis, but sources suggest the case involves suspected viral hemorrhagic fever, potentially Ebola or Marburg virus.

The patient, who had reportedly recently travelled to Africa, arrived at a Tábor hospital on his own displaying serious symptoms. He was moved under strict biohazard protocols to Bulovka, the only civilian facility in Czechia equipped to handle highly infectious diseases...

There is no reason to panic. Sample results from the patient from Bulovka are awaited, 26 people are in quarantine

Editorial staff of the Health Journal

An American admitted to Prague's Bulovka University Hospital on Friday with suspicion of a highly dangerous infection arrived in the Czech Republic from Africa via the USA on May 6. Health officials have ordered quarantine for 26 people who had been in high-risk contact with him. The results of the analysis of samples from the Bulovka patient should be available this afternoon.

The quarantine is mainly for health workers, as the deputy chief hygienist Matyáš Fošum told ČTK . Regarding the results of the tests so far, he said that malaria has been ruled out. " Some media speculated about Ebola or Marburg fever infection, but according to Bulovka Hospital spokeswoman Eva Stolejda Libigerová, these are speculations and will be clearer when the test results from the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin are available. According to Fošum, the procedure for the quarantine measures ordered by the hygienists will depend on the type of disease determined by the tests, " the agency further writes.

Spread to the public is unlikely

According to the Hygiene Service of the Czech Republic, the man had been in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, where it is possible to become infected with, for example, one of the hemorrhagic or bleeding fevers. Direct contact with an infected person, such as with body fluids, blood, sweat or tears, is necessary to transmit viruses such as Ebola and Marburg. " However, it is also necessary to consider infection with another hemorrhagic fever transmitted by mosquitoes or rodents, " the service said in a statement .

" With regard to the transmission methods of the tested infections, I can reassure the public that the risk that the infection could spread from this source to the public is unlikely ," adds Chief Hygienist Barbora Macková. Given the above, convening a crisis team is not being considered.

The doctors at Bulovka can handle it.

The public is also reassured by the director of the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences, Jan Konvalinka. In his status on the social network, he underlines the information of the hygiene service that the Ebola virus is transmitted exclusively through bodily fluids. Therefore, if a person does not directly touch a sick person, he cannot become infected.

According to the biochemist, we also have effective protective vaccinations and therapeutic antibodies – there are two approved treatments using monoclonal antibodies, both of which are very effective. " In addition, remdesivir, also well-known from the Covid pandemic, works against Ebola, but it was originally developed against Ebola. In other words, even if it is confirmed that it is an Ebola infection, there is no reason to panic. The doctors at Bulovka are ready and can handle it, " he adds.

The Bulovky Infectious Diseases Clinic is the only civilian facility in the Czech Republic that can care for patients with highly contagious infections, said head physician Hana Roháčová during a training session on the admission of such patients a month ago. However, so far, only people suspected of having such an infection have been admitted there.

Would be informative to know what else has been ruled out besides Ebola/Marburg, which were never that likely in the first place. It's entirely possible that this is not the result of an infectious process at all and could have been the result of something like a hemorrhagic stroke, a GI bleed, an accidental poisoning, etc.
