Doctors report 14 LGV cases in ČR
ČTK | 17 JULY 2012
Prague, July 16 (CTK) - The epidemic of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV), usually occurring in Subsaharan Africa, South America, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean, has arrived in the Czech Republic where 14 cases were registered by the end of May, doctor Daniela Vanousova has told CTK.
The first occurrence in Europe was recorded in Rotterdam in February 2003, said Vanousova, of the Centre for Veneral Diseases in the Na Bulovce Hospital in Prague, said.
So far, 1600 cases of the disease have been confirmed in advanced countries.
In Europe, the occurrence is closely linked with gays, most of whom are also HIV-positive, and extremely risky sexual behaviour.
The infection is confirmed by lab tests. It is caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.
Antibiotics treatment must be provided for a sufficiently long time. A surgery is needed if lymphs fester and bowels are constricted, Vanousova said.
