Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has been confirmed in a commercial large-scale laying hen farm in the village of Kosičky in the Hradec Králové region. There are currently more than 230,000 laying hens on the farm. In accordance with applicable legislation, all poultry on the farm will be culled. A three-kilometer protection zone and a ten-kilometer surveillance zone will be defined around the outbreak. In these zones, extraordinary veterinary measures will be declared to limit the movement of poultry, inventories of all poultry farms will be carried out, and mass events such as bird fairs or exhibitions, which pose a high risk of spreading poultry diseases, will be prohibited.
Bird flu is a dangerous viral infection of domestic chickens, turkeys, waterfowl, game birds, exotic birds and wild birds. Bird flu viruses are commonly found in wild birds and are mainly transmitted through droppings. Therefore, infection is most often caused by ingestion of feed or water contaminated with droppings of infected birds. Highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses cause high morbidity and mortality in birds. In poultry farming, they cause significant direct and indirect economic losses.
In addition to the two outbreaks in commercial farms, 11 outbreaks of avian influenza have been confirmed in non-commercial small-scale farms in the Czech Republic so far this year. The same infection has also been confirmed in dead wild birds in more than two dozen locations in the Czech Republic. The basic preventive measure against the introduction of avian influenza is to keep poultry in closed buildings and prevent its contact with wild birds. In farms where it is not possible to ensure placement in a closed building, it is necessary to take measures that minimize the risk of contamination of water, feed and bedding with wild bird droppings, for example, placing water and feed under shelter. It is also necessary to prevent the movement of poultry on water bodies where wild birds are present. Any suspicion of the occurrence of infection, which is an increased mortality of poultry, a sudden decrease in egg production or feed intake, must be reported to the regional veterinary administration.
