Current Status of H5N1 in Egypt and Indonesia

While everyone is focused on the pandemic spread of H1N1 throughout the world, the threat from H5N1 has not diminished. Egypt has already recorded 27 cases of human H5N1 infections since January 1, 2009. Within this 5 month period, there are more human cases than have ever been recorded on an annual basis since 2006 when the first human cases in Egypt were discovered. see: http://www.who.int/csr/disease/avian_influenza/country/cases_table_2009_06_02/en/index.html

In contrast, Indonesia, with the highest number of human H5N1 infections in the world, has not reported a single human infection of H5N1 to WHO in 2009. Tracking efforts by members of FT indicate that at least 5 locally confirmed cases of human H5N1 have not yet been reported to WHO. By about March 31, reports of confirmed human H5N1 infections in local media fail to appear suggesting that there is an official policy of suppression of media information on these human H5N1 infections in Indonesia.

Thanks for the info.I sort of suspect, egypt has used the recent bouts of both types of flu to gather a wealth of real information on bird flu in general.

Re: Current Status of H5N1 in Egypt and Indonesia

We have asked publicly several times this year for the Indonesian government to release information about the number of persons who have contracted H5N1.
