The Cumberland Valley School District continues to see absenteeism pile up as 265 students have been diagnosed with the H1N1 flu to date.
"While daily absenteeism is decreasing at schools such as Cumberland Valley High School, numbers are on the rise at schools such as Hampden, Silver Spring and Good Hope," the district said in a press release.

"To date, the district has had a total of approximately 265 students district-wide with the flu. We recognize this number seems high, but please understand this only represents approximately 3.5 percent of our total district-wide student enrollment."
<!-- old method 10 --><!-- new method quote -->The district said it is working with local and state health officials to monitor the situation and all schools will remain open and operate as normal.

The district will continue to regularly sanitize communal surfaces and promote healthy hygiene habits, the release said.

Students sick with the flu should remain at home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone, without the use of fever-reducing medication.
<!-- old method sidebar -20 --><!-- new method infobox -->The district will host an informational meeting to educate residents about the H1N1 virus at 7 p.m. Thursday. The meeting will be held in the Performing Arts Center at Cumberland Valley High School.

The meeting is free of charge and open to the public.

Schools report hundreds absent

Last updated: Thursday, October 22, 2009 7:59 AM EDT

The Cumberland Valley and Boiling Springs school districts have seen absenteeism pile up this week while dealing with possible cases of flu.
CV issued a release Tuesday evening that said 265 students in the district have been diagnosed with the flu to date.

The South Middleton School District reported 247 students (about 11 percent) absent Wednesday across the district, Assistant Superintendent Sandra Tippett said. Although many of those students have exhibited flu-like symptoms, the district does not have an official number for those who have been diagnosed with the flu, she added.
<!-- old method 10 --><!-- new method quote -->Although these numbers are higher than typical for Oct. 21, they are not record-setting absences, Tippett said. The South Middleton schools will remain open and operating as normal.

Cumberland Valley School District coordinator of health services Kathy Pollock estimated Wednesday that the number of absences had decreased.

Some of the schools with major absences, including the high school and Good Hope Middle School, reported decreases in the number of students absent Wednesday, Pollock said.
<!-- old method sidebar -20 --><!-- new method infobox -->Pockets of flu symptoms are appearing in spurts in the district, she said.

Don?t panic

?They shouldn?t be panicking about this. We have 260 cases in the district, but your child could have gone to the mall, to church ... to have been exposed,? Pollock said. ?Parents have to just not panic.?

As cases arise, the state Department of Health has recommended that districts discuss with the state department or municipal health departments the next best practices for limiting the spread of the virus, department spokeswoman Stacy Kriedeman said.

People are most infectious when they have a fever, and so the state Department of Health advises people to stay home until they are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.

?While daily absenteeism is decreasing at schools such as Cumberland Valley High School, numbers are on the rise at schools such as Hampden, Silver Spring and Good Hope,? the district said in a press release.

?To date, the district has had a total of approximately 265 students district-wide with the flu. We recognize this number seems high, but please understand this only represents approximately 3.5 percent of our total district-wide student enrollment.?

The district said it is working with local and state health officials to monitor the situation and all schools will remain open and operate as normal.

The district will continue to regularly sanitize communal surfaces and promote healthy hygiene habits, the release said.

Students sick with the flu should remain at home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone, without the use of fever-reducing medication.

Very very poor turnout at this event. :( About 25. Folks that attended definitely were now more interested. They were taking 2 and 3 of all the handouts to share with others.

Local school nurses were taking the ReadyMoms 'LiveReady' series to give to parents as they picked up their sick children!
