No Dengue Epidemic, Says Official

HAVANA TIMES, July 29 - Cases of dengue have been reported in Cuba, but there isn?t an epidemic in the country, affirmed Deputy Health Minister Luis Estruch when speaking to a legislative committee. The principal points of concentration of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits the disease, are located in the cities of Santiago de Cuba, Camag?ey, Bayamo and Pinar del Rio, reported IPS.

Dengue. (Photo: PL).Havana, Sep 25.- Doctor Luis Estruch Ranca?o, Deputy Minister of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology at the Public Health Ministry, stated that there is no dengue epidemic in Cuba.


Nor have deaths from that illness been produced, considered one of the viral diseases transmitted by most important vectors in America.

About 43 cases of dengue in travelers arrived from abroad, one of them caused 10 cases of secondary outbreak in the Havana municipality of Centro Habana and another in the neighborhood of Miramar, Playa, have been informed in the island this year.

Health authorities have sparked off an epidemiological fight faced with the possibility of secondary outbreaks, Estruch Ranca?o told Granma newspaper.

Another 41 patients from abroad diagnosed in the nation's several provinces have not brought about a secondary transmission of the disease, and since the medical point of view, they are currently "closed cases," the expert stated.

The Pan-American Health Organization has considered 2009 the year in which epidemic dengue has had more intensity in America, where the disease is reported in 35 countries.

Nearly 613,893 cases of dengue (11,601 hemorrhagic) and 211 deaths so far, have been registered until August 24. (PL).

Cuba Steps up Dengue Control Havana, Oct 5 - Cuba is stepping up dengue control in October, a historically favorable month for the reproduction of Aedes Aegypti mosquito, the country's epidemiological authorities reported Monday.

Juan Ramon Vazquez, chief of the Anti-Vectorial Struggle, told "Miradas de Lunes" TV program that about 35,000 experts are working in the country to impede a new outbreak of dengue this month.

Vazquez stated that Havana and Santiago de Cuba are the country's most threatened cities. Water deficit obliges people to store it in ideal tanks, favorable for the reproduction of the mosquito.

Although the Public Health Ministry denied an alleged dengue epidemic, epidemiological authorities have insisted on maintaining preventive and control labors.

According to official information, about 43 cases of dengue have been reported this year in travelers arrived from abroad, so that the country has stepped up epidemiological surveillance at airports.

The Pan-American Health Organization has considered 2009 the year in which epidemic dengue has had more intensity in America, where the disease is reported in 35 countries.

Cuba faces dengue outbreak but rules out epidemic

Cuba faces a dengue outbreak in an area of Havana, but there is no epidemic or deaths were reported so far, said Friday the deputy health minister, Luis Estruch.
The minister was quoted by the official daily Granma said that from two of 43 imported cases (dengue ill travelers who arrived on the island) there were two outbreaks, one in the densely packed neighborhood of Central Havana and another in the residential sector Miramar, in the northwest.
The outbreak emerged in July Centro Habana, with 10 cases, and it was controlled, while in Miramar, health authorities proceed "at this point''to a''showdown''epidemiology to prevent the spread of the virus, said Estruch.



? Cuba steps up measures against dengue and haemorrhagic conjunctivitis

Cuba is redoubling its media campaign and measures against dengue and hemorrhagic conjunctivitis, although the health authorities have not reported any outbreaks of these two diseases, according to various sources.
The measures include spraying for 21 consecutive days against the dengue mosquito, Aedes aegypti, where cases are detected disease and sanitation actions of landfills, water tanks and gardens, and waste collection in all municipalities of the island.
Similarly, in radio and television messages stressing the importance of each person review at home and workplace potential reservoirs of insect reproduction, and calls people not to touch your eyes and wash hands frequently to prevent the spread of conjunctivitis.
