Health Crisis Deepens: Hepatitis A Outbreak in Eastern Santiago de Cuba
Saturday, January 24, 2026 by Richard Morales

A hepatitis A outbreak appears to be spreading across various regions in eastern Cuba, particularly in Santiago de Cuba, amidst severe sanitation issues, garbage accumulation, sewer system failures, and the deterioration of the potable water infrastructure, according to warnings from those areas.

Journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada reported on Facebook that the disease is primarily transmitted through the fecal-oral route in this territory, often via the consumption of water or food contaminated with microscopic fecal matter—a daily risk for city residents given the current health conditions.

The situation is compounded by the lack of regular solid waste collection, aged and overflowing sewer networks, and potential cross-contamination between sewage and drinking water pipes...

Health alert in Matanzas due to outbreaks of hepatitis in several municipalities
By CiberCuba Editorial Team
Saturday, April 4, 2026 - 1:51 PM

Health authorities have intensified epidemiological surveillance due to outbreaks of hepatitis in several municipalities, with the most critical situation concentrated in the Versalles neighborhood of the city of Matanzas, where 18 active cases have been recorded.

The information was released this Friday by the provincial telecenter TV Yumurí through its Facebook profile, citing Dr. Andrés Lamas Acevedo, director of the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Microbiology, who specified that the cases in Versalles are distributed across areas "from the Plácido pharmacy to the Yumurí River, the Americano neighborhood near the Cumbre, and areas close to the Ernest Thaelman school."

The specialist acknowledged the relative seriousness of the situation, although he tried to downplay the alarm: "Although it is not a large-scale outbreak, the joint actions between the health sector and other agencies will help to cut transmission."...

Hepatitis cases in Camagüey raise alarms
By CiberCuba Editorial Team
Saturday, April 25, 2026 - 4:02 PM

Health authorities in Camagüey have acknowledged a "notable increase" in suspected and probable cases of hepatitis A within the province, with a higher concentration in the main municipality, although they continue to deny the existence of a formal outbreak.

The report, released by Televisión Camagüey, includes a statement from a local health authority: "At this time, there is an increase in our province of Camagüey of suspected and probable cases of hepatitis A virus, primarily distributed with a higher number of cases in our municipality."

Despite this, the same official stated: "At this moment, we do not have an outbreak in the municipality of Camagüey, although there is a notable increase in the disease."

The official stance stands in stark contrast to what citizens and apparent healthcare personnel are reporting on social media, who claim that the situation is far more serious than what the authorities acknowledge...
