Cruise ship - Hantavirus - May 3+ - As of May 22 per WHO: 13 total cases, 3 total deaths - WHO considers the outbreak over (July 2, 2026)

The PPE used by the onshore people receiving the passengers belies their recommendations for mask and 1 or 2 metre distancing. Full hazmat with filtered masks. Same for the contact tracing protocol with "long flights" only. If one lady was infected after brief contact with the lady who was taken off the flight in Johannesburg then "long flight tracing only" is not enough.

PARIS - One of five French people flown back to France on May 10 from the cruise ship struck by a deadly hantavirus outbreak is showing symptoms of the illness, French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said.

“On of them showed symptoms in the repatriation plane,” he posted on X. “These five passengers have immediately been placed in strict isolation until further notice.

“They are getting medical treatment and will have tests and a medical check-up,”
he added.

Mr Lecornu also said he would issue a decree later on May 10 authorising appropriate isolation measures being put in place to protect the public.

From early May 10, passengers from the MV Hondius have been evacuated from the ship, anchored off the Spanish island of Tenerife. From there, they have been flown out to hospitals in their home countries or in the Netherlands for medical checks.

A jet carrying the five evacuated French cruise ship passengers landed a little before 4.30pm (10.30pm Singapore time) on May 10 at Le Bourget airport, north of Paris, AFP journalists saw.

Shortly afterwards, they were transferred to a convoy of five ambulances and taken under police escort to the Bichat hospital in Paris, an AFP photographer saw.
Ministerial meeting

The original plan was for them to be kept in quarantine for 72 hours, so doctors could carry out a complete medical examination before they were allowed home for another 45 days under special medical supervision.

Mr Lecornu’s announcement of the symptomatic passenger however suggests tighter measures are now being prepared. Earlier on May 10, a joint statement from the foreign ministry and health ministry had envisaged just this possibility.

If any of the returnees showed symptoms, they would immediately be reclassified as a “suspect case” and taken for evaluation and treatment in the appropriate medical establishment, the statement said.

On the afternoon of May 10, Mr Lecornu held a special meeting with key ministers and top health officials at his offices to discuss the care of the new arrivals.

Among those present were Health Minister Stephanie Rist, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez and Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.

In his statement on X later on May 10, Mr Lecornu said the health minister would be issuing a statement in the evening.

"We are taking the strictest measures in the European area": Health Minister Stéphanie Rist responds to concerns about hantavirus

(video in French)

Five French crew members from the MV Hondius have been placed in isolation in a Parisian hospital amid growing concerns about hantavirus infections. Health Minister Stéphanie Rist answered questions from Laurent Delahousse on Sunday, May 10.

This text is part of the transcript of the interview above. Click on the video to watch it in its entirety.

Laurent Delahousse: Good evening, Madam Minister, thank you for being with us. First, can you confirm that one of the five French nationals who returned to our territory presented symptoms upon repatriation?

Stéphanie Rist: Good evening, Laurent Delahousse. Yes, I am here as Minister of Health to inform the French people. Indeed, one of our five compatriots has had symptoms that could potentially resemble those of the hantavirus, which, I remind you, is a known virus that has already caused epidemics in Argentina. We will have to wait 24 hours for the test results of this patient to know whether it is this virus or not.

Laurent Delahousse: That would confirm that the incubation period is sometimes very long.

Stéphanie Rist: So, the incubation period is six weeks. It's often within the first 15 days, but it can last up to six weeks. That's why we will be implementing isolation measures that will last for those six weeks.

Laurent Delahousse: A few hours ago, the government issued a decree implementing isolation measures for contact cases. This concerns this first group. First, these five individuals will be isolated and will have to remain in the hospital, even though they were scheduled to return home.

Stéphanie Rist: So these five cases are considered high-risk because they are people who spent time on this ship where there was transmission of the virus. We are taking very strict measures with the Prime Minister, the strictest in the European area, to protect the French people, considering that, because it is at the very beginning of the epidemic that the battle is won, it is essential to break the chains of transmission of the virus. This isolation, in the first few days, will take place in the hospital to undergo the necessary battery of examinations: tests, genetic tests, PCR tests, to obtain the results. And we will see in the coming days the details of the isolation, which will last 42 days.

Laurent Delahousse: So, that's the situation for those citizens who have returned and are in the hospital. There were also eight French citizens on the plane that transported one of the first victims of this hantavirus. First, were these eight people identified? Are they being monitored? Have they been tested?

Stéphanie Rist: You know, we're really very focused and working hard. These people have been identified, they've been tested. Currently, they're testing negative and, most importantly, they're in isolation. It's very important, I repeat, it's really at the beginning that we need to act, and that's why I'm here tonight. It's a virus we know, one that has already caused epidemics. We already have scientific studies, even if we obviously don't know everything.

Laurent Delahousse: Does that mean it's not comparable to the coronavirus? Because I imagine some people are wondering this tonight. We went through something quite terrible six years ago. Is that completely unrelated?

Stéphanie Rist: I understand the concerns. This is a virus we know. In the 1990s, this Andean strain was discovered. In the 1970s, all hantaviruses were identified. So, these are viruses we know, that scientists know, and we are working with them to put the best measures in place. The necessary measures, which we are taking with the Prime Minister, involve isolating people to prevent transmission.

Laurent Delahousse: How is this virus transmitted?

Stéphanie Rist: In this Andean strain affecting the ship's patients, this particular strain can be transmitted via aerosol. In the study concerning the 2018 epidemic in Argentina, published in a very reputable journal, the New England Journal of Medicine , it was shown that close contact is necessary, likely through airborne transmission.

Laurent Delahousse: A virus knows no borders; we've had a sad experience with that. You just said we were the strictest in Europe, but this virus will circulate, it can circulate. Are you worried about other measures, or perhaps less significant ones, taken by other countries?

Stéphanie Rist: You know, I'm focused, and I'm also a scientist, a doctor, a scientist. So I believe we need to adapt based on what we know as it evolves. We also need to be able to lead by example sometimes. And we believe that since the incubation period is quite long, lasting six weeks, we must break this chain of transmission right from the start. And that's what we're putting in place.

Laurent Delahousse: We are not in a pandemic. But if, by chance, we were to face a pandemic one day, is France ready today? Does it have, for example, all the masks it would need?

Stéphanie Rist: Well, we're not there yet, as you rightly pointed out, but indeed, we have checked. We have the necessary stocks of masks and tests, since the tests, which are PCR tests that we know how to do well, and which are carried out at the Pasteur Institute, are also available.

Laurent Delahousse: One last question, there is no vaccine?

Stéphanie Rist: There is no vaccine to date, although research is being done on vaccines since, as I said, it is a known virus.

Stéphanie Rist announces the first case of hantavirus in France. The patient is a French woman who participated in the cruise aboard the MV Hondius and was repatriated. Approximately twenty close contacts have been identified and have been asked to self-isolate.

"Tests have come back positive for hantavirus" for a woman who was one of five French nationals repatriated by air on Sunday after being evacuated from the vessel MV Hondius, where a hantavirus outbreak was detected, Health Minister Stéphanie Rist announced on Monday, May 11, on France Inter. "Her condition deteriorated overnight," she added. The patient is being treated in "a hospital specializing in infectious diseases, featuring specialized room technology designed to be highly protective—obviously to prevent the virus from spreading," the Health Minister stated.

At Least One Evacuated American Passenger From m/v Hondius Tests Positive for Hantavirus

#19,156

Overnight the HHS announced that - of the 17 evacuated Americans from the m/v Hondius - 1 (currently asymptomatic) individual has tested positive for Hantavirus, and a second individual has shown `mild symptoms'.

While the mantra has been that testing of asymptomatic individuals was unlikely to yield positive results, this is a reminder that there are very few absolutes when it comes to viruses and human physiology.

We discussed the possibility of asymptomatic spread of the Andes Virus a week ago, and while evidence is sparse, studies have suggested (see Serological Evidence of Hantavirus Infection in Apparently Healthy People from Rural and Slum Communities in Southern Chile) that at least some infections may be mild or asymptomatic.

A more recent 2025 study (see Virological characterization of a new isolated strain of Andes virus . . .), published in PloS NTD reported:

In this work, we described the isolation of the strain responsible for the largest ANDV PTP transmission outbreak, which occurred in the small town of Epuyén and began on November 2, 2018. This strain, ARG-Epuyén, exhibited a high capacity for PTP transmission, necessitating the implementation of quarantine measures to curtail further spread [8].

The median reproductive number (the mean number of secondary cases caused by an infected person) was 2.12 before control measures were implemented and subsequently dropped to below 1.0 by late January.

Early intervention allowed for the collection of samples leading to the isolation of this new ANDV strain from an asymptomatic case. An early passage of this strain was sequenced, revealing only one amino acid difference from the virus recovered from the patient. Like the Andes/ARG strain, this strain was able to grow in a new host without needing adaptation [
26].

So while rare, there is precedent for positive test results from asymptomatic individuals.

What isn't well understood is whether - or how effectively - asymptomatic (or presymptomatic) individuals may be able to transmit the virus. The ECDC's Threat Assessment Brief, published on May 6th, had this to say:
Do asymptomatic individuals have a role in transmission?

Current very limited evidence does not support a significant role for asymptomatic individuals in hantavirus transmission, supporting active symptom monitoring of asymptomatic exposed individuals. Infectivity is highest on the first day of symptom onset, which indicates a high likelihood of some infectiousness one-two days before onset of symptoms.

While a lot of governments, eager to reassure the public, are quick to equate asymptomatic with `healthy', the reality is far more nuanced. Given its lengthy incubation period, an exposed individual's status can change in a matter of hours.

Which is why - while not wanting to use the dreaded `Q' word - exposed individuals around the world are being segregated and monitored for symptoms.

While I remain far from convinced that this Andes virus outbreak will turn into a global public health emergency, there are enough unknowns here to command our respect and attention.

And even if the current strain of ANDV is incapable of bigger things, evolution is a thing.

Meaning that anything we say today about the virus may not hold true tomorrow.

Latest update

The UK Government has worked with international partners to ensure the safe return of all remaining British nationals on board the MV Hondius, with passengers now safely transferred to Arrowe Park Hospital.

20 British nationals along with 1 German national, who is a UK resident, and 1 Japanese passenger from the MV Hondius are now being monitored at Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral. Within a 72-hour period, these passengers will receive clinical assessments and testing. The UK Government repatriated the Japanese passenger at the request of the Japanese Government and they will complete their isolation in the UK in line with UKHSA guidance.

Strict infection control measures have been in place throughout the journey, with passengers, crew, drivers and medical teams all wearing necessary personal protective equipment such as face masks.

During the 72-hour period at Arrowe Park, public health specialists from UKHSA and infectious diseases specialists from the NHS will assess their current condition and determine where the passengers can suitably isolate. Passengers will be asked to isolate for up to 45 days upon their return, with regular testing and care provided by NHS and UKHSA.

During their isolation period, passengers will have daily contact with UKHSA health protection teams to check on their wellbeing and ensure that they are supported to isolate safely. The UK government will ensure those self-isolating are given the appropriate support.

UKHSA has worked with the public health teams in devolved administrations and UK Overseas Territories to trace any individuals who had potential high-risk contact with cases and will remain in close contact with these individuals for 45 days from the potential exposure.

Professor Robin May, Chief Scientific Officer at UKHSA, said:
We are pleased to confirm that all British nationals onboard the MV Hondius have now safely returned to the UK and are being supported by UKHSA and NHS medical experts at Arrowe Park, who have worked at pace to prepare for the safe arrival of passengers at the facility.

Staff at Arrowe Park have once again demonstrated their commitment and professionalism in responding rapidly to a health emergency, and we are very grateful.

Throughout this incident, we have worked closely with government departments including FCDO, DHSC, MHCLG and MOD alongside international partners to support the safe repatriation of British passengers. The safety and wellbeing of those passengers remains our priority. The risk remains very low for members of the general public.

Public Health Minister Sharon Hodgson said:
I want to thank all those who have worked to bring our British nationals home and the NHS workers now caring for them at Arrowe Park Hospital – their dedication and professionalism show our NHS at its very best.

None of the passengers are symptomatic but we will monitor them closely over the next 72 hours at the hospital, as part of a precautionary isolation period. With no cases or symptoms among them and our stringent monitoring and isolation measures, the risk to the public remains extremely low.

Hantavirus outbreak: 2 Georgia residents exposed arrive at Emory University Hospital for evaluation

May 11, 2026 / 11:02 AM EDT

Two Georgia residents believed to have been exposed to hantavirus arrived in Atlanta on Monday and were taken to Emory University Hospital after being transported through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, federal health officials confirmed.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the patients were part of a coordinated federal repatriation effort involving American citizens who were exposed aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, where an outbreak of the Andes variant of hantavirus has prompted international medical response measures.

Video from Monday morning showed the two patients being removed from an ambulance on stretchers and taken into Emory University Hospital for evaluation and care. Their current conditions were not immediately released.

Yesterday May 10, 2026 a video-clip footage was shown on danish TV2 News, documenting a scene where a man,
clad in black and with a used blue protective suite in his hand, exited one of the red transport busses, highlighting
potential breaches in the "sealed" protocol for MV Hondius evacuees in Tenerife.
Reports indicate concerns arose about contact with the local population, with one passenger reportedly showing symptoms after a flight.

I found a video of a news report that have the video clip of the incident, here is a link :

A member of the Department of Mental Health team leaves the bus before arriving at the airport.
This is the same video-clip, that I saw on danish TV2 News, showing the incident involving a man leaving the bus, in this link documented by local Canary Islands media.

If any of the ship passangers on that bus,was the same ship passangers that the same day developed symptoms on the plane back to France or USA ,
then the man who left the bus could be a huge problem!

Andes hantavirus outbreak: ECDC continues working on the frontline to support EU Member States

Press release
11 May 2026

On 10 May, the cruise ship MV Hondius arrived at the port of Granadilla, Tenerife, Canary Islands. Passengers and crew continue to disembark and to be medically evacuated to their countries of origin. At disembarkation, they are all considered high-risk and repatriated, whether symptomatic or not, through non-commercial flights.

According to ECDC’s scientific advice, passengers and crew who have symptoms require immediate medical isolation, testing and medical care, while those who do not have symptoms are asked to quarantine and monitor for symptoms for up to six weeks.

Today, one new confirmed case has been reported in France: a former passenger who developed acute symptoms on the flight returning to France, and who is currently in intensive care.

Because of remaining uncertainties and the long incubation period, it is possible that we may see additional cases in former passengers and crew in the coming weeks,’ says Dr Pamela Rendi-Wagner, Director of ECDC. ‘This is why ECDC’s precautionary approach since the beginning has been very important.’

PHE%20RT-30.jpg.webp

In addition to the ECDC expert on board the ship since 6 May, ECDC deployed additional experts through the EU Health Task Force on Saturday, 9 May, to provide technical and operational support to the Spanish authorities as needed.

ECDC continues to work closely with the Member States, the European Commission, WHO and other partners to support a coordinated response and information-sharing. In connection with this outbreak, ECDC rapidly engaged the EU Public Health Reference Laboratory for emerging, rodent-borne, and zoonotic viral pathogens to provide support to the Member States to ensure rapid and high-quality diagnostics.

PHE%20RT-1.jpg.webp

Recent genetic sequencing of the virus strongly suggests that the confirmed tested passenger samples are linked to the same original source of infection. Genomic information also shows that the virus involved in the outbreak is similar to Andes viruses already known to circulate in South America, and is not a new variant. There is currently no evidence that this variant spreads more easily or causes more severe disease than other Andes viruses.

ECDC will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Recent developments do not affect ECDC’s assessment, and the risk for the general population in the EU/EEA remains very low.
