In the world of bacteria, C. difficile is about as tough as they come.

Able to live outside a host for long periods of time and to hide within the human body until conditions are right for it to flourish, it can be among the hardest of infections to control and fight.

Peter Fielding of St. Catharines knows this better than most. For 13 months, he has watched his wife, Cynthia, struggle with a persistent C. difficile infection. It's left her so weak, she needs to be spoon-fed in a room at Fort Erie's Douglas Memorial Hospital...
