Synopsis:
This position statement updates the standardized surveillance case definition for novel influenza A virus infection, a
nationally notifiable condition. Updates address changes in the epidemiology of influenza A viruses circulating in
wildlife, domestic poultry, and livestock, and clarifies laboratory test methods available.
• Updates include:
o Revisions to clinical, laboratory, and epidemiological criteria for case ascertainment and
classification.
o Modifications to the confirmed, probable, and suspect case definitions to reflect current knowledge
and situation.
o Addition of reporting of probable cases to the list of nationally notifiable conditions.​

Report the following to public health authorities:
• Any person meeting laboratory criteria for reporting; OR
• Any person meeting clinical criteria for reporting AND meeting epidemiologic linkage criteria for reporting; OR
• Any person meeting vital records criteria for reporting; OR
• Any person meeting healthcare record criteria for reporting.

A1. Clinical Criteria for Reporting*
• One or more of the following: Cough, sore throat, fever (measured or subjective), shortness of breath
or difficulty breathing, conjunctivitis (red eye, discharge from eye), headache, myalgia, arthralgia,
fatigue, rhinorrhea or nasal congestion, diarrhea, vomiting.

*Clinical criteria for reporting must be paired with epidemiologic linkage criteria for reporting to trigger a report to
public health.​
