Coughing spell ignites fight between Wichita brothers

BY STAN FINGER
The Wichita Eagle

WICHITA - Maybe it was a case of swine flu ? make that H1N1 ? paranoia. A coughing spell at about 6:30 p.m. Monday in east Wichita ignited an argument between brothers that escalated to the point that one beat the other with an aluminum baseball bat, sending him to the hospital, police said.

A 27-year-old man became upset that his 28-year-old brother didn?t cover his mouth when he coughed, police said. The attack, which took place in the 3300 block of East 13th Street, fractured the older brother?s arm and left him with other injuries.

He is being treated at Wesley Medical Center. The younger brother was booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated assault.

Re: Coughing spell ignites fight between Wichita brothers

I thought it was too funny to pass up. But there is a serious question there: There might be some deaths of people infected with H1N1 that we don't want to count. If this man had died from his injuries, I don't think we would want to count his death as due to H1N1.

During the SARS outbreak, I remember reading a story about two SARS patients in mainland China who died when villagers got panicked about SARS and burned down the village isolation unit. I believe China did not count those deaths as due to SARS, actually making it look like both recovered, something that might or might not have happened.

Hopefully, unless a pandemic produces such disruption of order that people go insane, deaths like that will be statistically insignificant to affect the global death toll.

But it is something to ponder.

Real Monty.

If such practice starts to dilagate in the subways ...

Maybe it is finaly time clocked to the authorities in such hot zones to impose a policy of wearing masks, as more shielded prone places worldwide do ...

This reminds me of one of the earlier stories from a few weeks ago:

http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-world/mob-stones-chilean-bus-amid-flu-fears-20090523-bioe.html
Chile has reported 15 new cases of swine flu, hours after Argentine protesters stoned a Chilean bus with tourists suspected of carrying the virus and police fired rubber bullets to disperse the mob.
...
Residents of the town of Godoy Cruz were trying to stop the 43 passengers, one of whom had flu-like symptoms, from reaching a local hospital where they were required to appear.

Yes, there will be more panic distancing as in the ancient plagues times were, when all these "only mild assured" folks starts to understand that there were not be instaurated any previous strong containment measure, at the same time when no enaugh certain cures/shieldings will be provided in the near future ...
