The expanded immunization program coordination department will start a campaign against poliomyelitis in Côte d'Ivoire, announced Pr Ekra Kouadio this Monday, June 13, 2022 at their premises in Treichville.

The Expanded Vaccination Program Coordination Directorate (Dcpev) summoned the press to announce a vaccination campaign to interrupt the transmission of polio that recently surfaced in Côte d'Ivoire. It concerns children whose age varies between 0 and 5 years.

Through this campaign, 1,994,049 children in the country's 32 high-risk health districts will be administered the doses during the first round, which will take place from June 17 to 20, 2022. The second round will take place in July 2022, according to director Ekra Kouadio Daniel.

In such circumstances, it is believed that there is a risk of urban polio cases

“The launch of this campaign will take place in the commune of Treichville, in the Yobou Lambert sub-district (ex-Biafra) from June 17 to 20, 2022. The virus that causes poliomyelitis circulates in Abidjan. And it was detected in two samples that were taken in Abidjan. So in such circumstances, we think that there is a risk of cases of urban polio so we must very quickly interrupt the transmission of this virus and that is why this campaign is going to take place,” he explained.

High risk areas

Pr Ekra Kouadio Daniel also instructed on the specific choice of health districts that are targeted in this vaccination campaign.

“Why the 32 districts. This is because in these 32 health districts, we have done a risk assessment. Normally we could say that the whole country is at risk, but the districts most at risk are the 32 which belong to 9 health regions,” he added.

He also said that “nearly 3 million children in the remaining 81 districts since the past weeks”.

It should be noted that on August 25, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared the African continent free of wild poliovirus (WPV) after four consecutive years with no reported cases. This is a major step forward but is not the end of the fight against poliomyelitis.
