First two cases of monkeypox reported in Ivory Coast

2 hours ago
AFP

The Ivorian Ministry of Health announced that it had recorded two "non-fatal" cases of Mpox, a virus long called "monkeypox", the first reported in this West African country since the resurgence of the epidemic in 2022.

" Two confirmed non-fatal cases of monkeypox were recorded in July 2024 respectively in the districts of Tabou (southwest) and Koumassi in Abidjan ," the ministry said in a statement seen by AFP on Wednesday morning.

" The first case is a 46-year-old patient (...) who consulted on July 1 for fever, headaches and skin rashes. The second case, aged 20 (...) presented on July 14 with skin and oral mucosal rashes ," said the ministry, which added that the diagnosis was made after analysis at the Pasteur Institutes in Abidjan and Dakar. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health told AFP that the lives of the two patients were not in danger and that they were being monitored.

The disease is characterized in particular by skin rashes on the genitals or in the mouth, and may be accompanied by fever, sore throat or pain in the lymph nodes. Mpox was first discovered in humans in 1970 in what is now the DRC (formerly Zaire), with the spread of the Clade I subtype, mainly limited since then to countries in western and central Africa, with patients generally being contaminated by infected animals.

In May 2022, Mpox virus infections occurred worldwide, via another subtype of the virus, mainly affecting gay and bisexual men and had caused some 140 deaths out of about 90,000 cases in 111 countries. But since last September, a new, more deadly strain has been spreading in the DRC with nearly 450 deaths out of 11,000 cases.

MPOX " remains a threat to global health ," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in early July, with the organization saying that cases had been reported in 26 countries in one month.

Monkeypox/6 cases detected in Ivory Coast
Ministry of Health unveils its response strategy

Monkeypox has been on the rise in Côte d'Ivoire in recent months. Last July, a total of 6 confirmed non-fatal cases of Monkeypox were recorded in the health districts, including 1 case in Tabou, 1 in Koumassi and 4 recently detected in the Commune of Yopougon.

This is the information given by the Director General of the National Institute of Public Hygiene (INHP), Professor Ekra Daniel Kouadio, during a press conference he held this Thursday, August 1, 2024, at the Institution located in Treichville.

According to Prof Ekra, the disease is raging in several African countries. The Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded 11,166 cases including 450 deaths. South Africa, for its part, has 20 confirmed cases including 3 deaths.

Faced with this emergency situation, the Ministry of Health has put in place a response strategy. This includes:

✓ Activation of the Public Health Emergency Operations Center (COUSP)
✓ Strengthening epidemiological surveillance in all health establishments for the early detection of suspected cases and contact tracing.
✓ Free care for patients
✓ Strengthening infection prevention and control measures in health facilities
✓ The development of a multi-sectoral plan to combat Monkeypox
✓Informing and raising awareness among the population about measures to prevent the disease.

In order to stop the chain of contamination of the virus responsible, Prof. Ekra Daniel invites the populations to respect the preventive measures issued by the health authorities. These include among others:

✓Avoid handling and consuming wild animals
✓Consult a health center if fever and rashes appear
✓Avoid close physical contact with people infected with monkeypox. Wear gloves and protective equipment for medical personnel when treating patients.
 To sneeze into a tissue, throw it away and wash your hands with soap and water
✓Avoid touching the biological and bodily fluids of patients
✓Wash your hands regularly with soap and water after being in contact with a sick person.

Monkeypox or Monkeypox virus infection is a viral infectious disease transmitted by contact with the blood or body fluids of infected people or animals (squirrels, rodents, monkeys). The most common symptoms are fever, headache, muscle pain, severe fatigue, appearance of rashes on the body...

With our correspondent in Abidjan, Marine Jeannin

Of the eight confirmed cases of monkeypox, the first was in the Tabou district in the west of the country and the other seven in Abidjan , in the communes of Koumassi, Yopougon and Abobo. The chains of transmission have not yet been identified with certainty, as this eruptive fever can be transmitted from animals to humans, or from human to human.

The Ministry of Water and Forests has issued a statement reiterating the ban on keeping wild animals in captivity. With hunting currently closed, it is illegal to raise monkeys, agoutis, squirrels or other wild animals as pets or for bushmeat consumption.

The Minister of Water and Forests calls in particular for "the collaboration of the populations "

The ministry invites the population to hand them over to the authorities before August 31. Offenders face prison sentences of 5 to 20 years. The Minister of Water and Forests, Laurent Tchagba, calls for " civic-mindedness and collaboration from the population in order to stem the spread of this deadly disease ."

With a resurgence of monkeypox confirmed in several African and European countries, the World Health Organization announced Wednesday that it was convening an emergency committee to decide whether the outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern.

Abidjan, August 8, 2024 – In order to stop the spread of the monkeypox virus, cases of which have recently been confirmed in Côte d'Ivoire, the Ministry of Water and Forests issued a press release on August 6 prohibiting the possession of live wild animals.

"The keeping of live wild animals, including monkeys, chimpanzees, rats and squirrels, as pets, and the consumption of bush meat, particularly that of monkeys and rodents, are factors that promote the spread of this disease," reads the document.

Consequently, the Ministry invites all persons holding these live wild animals in captivity in homes, land, farms, hotels or any other place, without an authorization document, to return them to its nearest service no later than August 31, 2024.

Any person violating this measure is liable to prosecution and penalties ranging from 5 to 20 years of imprisonment and/or a fine of 5 to 100 million FCFA, in accordance with the provisions in force.

Laurent Tchagba therefore calls for "civic-mindedness and the collaboration of the populations in order to stem the spread of this deadly disease."

Monkeypox is characterized by fever, headaches, backaches, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, and a skin rash in the form of spots or even pustules.

IVORY COAST: 28 CASES OF MPOX RECORDED INCLUDING ONE DEATH

C.Bo. with AFP
THE 20/08/2024 at 23:31

The National Institute of Public Hygiene recorded "28 confirmed cases including one death" in Abidjan as of August 20, said Dr. Daouda Coulibaly. A previous report on August 1 reported 6 "non-fatal" cases.

Twenty-eight cases of mpox, including one death, have been reported in Ivory Coast , Agence France-Presse (AFP) learned on Tuesday, August 20, from the National Institute of Public Hygiene (INHP).

The INHP recorded "28 confirmed cases including one death" in Abidjan as of August 20, said Dr. Daouda Coulibaly. A previous report on August 1 reported 6 "non-fatal" cases. "The situation is not alarming," said Daouda Coulibaly, "we are at the beginning of a nascent epidemic, there is no outbreak."

"Surveillance is reinforced," he added, "we must break the chains of transmission, identify the contacts of cases, isolate them and follow them."

If the first cases of MPOX identified this year in Ivory Coast corresponded to the strain of the previous global epidemic which occurred in 2022, clade 2, "analyses are underway" to find that of the new cases.

A new, more deadly variant

In parallel with a resurgence of MPOX cases in Africa, a new, more transmissible and more deadly variant, clade 1b, emerged in September in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) .

All strains combined, the DRC is by far the most affected country, with at least 16,000 cases including 548 deaths. Cases of clade 1b have also been detected in other East African countries and one in Sweden.

The resurgence of MPOX in Africa prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a public health emergency of international concern on August 14, its highest level of health alert, already triggered in 2022.

Formerly called monkeypox, the virus was discovered in humans in 1970 in the DRC with the spread of the clade 1 subtype, of which the new variant is a mutation.

Monkeypox epidemic: 32 cases confirmed in Ivory Coast, including six cured and one death (Minister)

Some thirty-two (32) confirmed cases of monkeypox, including six people cured and one death, have been recorded to date in Côte d'Ivoire.

The announcement was made by Pierre Dimba, the Ivorian Minister of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage.

He spoke in a press release sanctioning the monitoring committee for this disease held this Saturday, August 24, 2024 in Abidjan.

"The current situation of the epidemic is as follows: 32 confirmed cases. Reported cases come from 15 health districts out of 113. These outbreaks are not linked to each other. We currently note the absence of serious forms in hospital. 272 contact cases are being followed up in the 15 health districts concerned. Among the reported cases, we note to date, 6 cured. We deplore one death in a patient with risk factors for severity," said Mr. Dimba in this press release.

Continuing, he noted that the main cause of contamination is the handling and consumption of bushmeat.

"Monitoring of contact cases shows human-to-human contamination, particularly when patients are not isolated and have frequent contact with relatives. It should be noted that the Dianra health district is the most affected district in our country with 9 confirmed cases and 8 suspected cases," added the Minister of Health.

Furthermore, Mr. Dimba recommended that the population respect the preventive measures for this disease.

These measures include avoiding handling rodents, avoiding contact with sick people, suspected cases and soiled objects, washing hands regularly with soap and water after any contact, isolating the sick person at home or in hospital and wearing personal protective equipment when caring for sick people.

The Minister of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage concluded by reassuring the population that the reported cases "are sporadic without a real localized outbreak."

Monkeypox or Mpox is a viral disease transmitted by rodents. However, it can be transmitted from person to person through contact with sick subjects.

𝑷𝑹𝑶𝑷𝑶𝑺 𝑳𝑰𝑴𝑰𝑵𝑨𝑰𝑹𝑬

As part of the fight against monkeypox or Mpox, a monitoring committee was held today, Saturday, August 24, 2024, in the Conference room of the Ministry of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage under my Presidency.

Mpox was declared by the Africa CDC and WHO as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on August 14, 2024.

The focus in Africa remains the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the most affected country, as of August 15 with 15,664 potential cases and 548 deaths.

In Côte d'Ivoire, since the start of this global health crisis, we have instructed our services to strengthen surveillance and monitoring of cases, to strengthen diagnostic, treatment, prevention and infection control capacities.

The current situation of the epidemic is as follows: 32 confirmed cases. Reported cases come from 15 health districts out of 113, including Tabou (1 case), Yopougon (6 cases), Koumassi (1 case), Cocody-Bingerville (3 cases), Abobo (1 case), Sakassou (4 cases), Meagui (1 case), Kani (1 case), Dianra (9 cases), Daoukro (1 case), Danané (1 case), Yamoussoukro (1 case), Soubré (1 case), Bouna (1 case).

These homes are not connected to each other.

We currently note the absence of serious forms in hospital.

272 contact cases are being monitored in the 15 health districts concerned.

Among the cases reported, we note to date 6 cured namely; 1 in Tabou, 1 in Soubré, 1 in Meagui, 1 Dianra, 1 in Bouna and 1 in Sakassou.

We deplore 1 death occurring in a patient with risk factors for severity.

The main cause of contamination is the handling and consumption of bushmeat.

Surveillance of contact cases shows human-to-human contamination, particularly when patients are not isolated and have frequent contact with relatives.

It should be noted that the Dianra health district is the most affected district in our country with 9 confirmed cases and 8 suspected cases.

Given the particular context of Dianra, we have launched a multidisciplinary mission with an epidemiologist, a hygienist and an infectiologist to support our local teams in order to provide definitive solutions and stop contamination in the Dianra health district through the strict application of the directives.

The response plan developed includes strengthening epidemiological surveillance and case monitoring, improving diagnostic capacities, care, and vaccination.

Concerning surveillance, it is done in the health districts and at the borders by temperature control and observation of hands and faces for rashes. The monitoring of contact cases is done by the INHP and its branches throughout the territory with the support of the health districts.

Contact cases are followed for 21 days to observe their progress.

Regarding diagnostic capabilities, the diagnosis of this disease is done by PCR at the Pasteur Institute.
We have activated our laboratory network so that the diagnosis is available in the various regional health centers through the Anti-Tuberculosis Centers.

As for the management of confirmed cases, the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Department has developed guidelines which are available in public and private health facilities.
Training of District and Regional Health Officers has been carried out. Case management, including psychosocial support, is free throughout the country.

The Ministry of Health has also made arrangements to acquire vaccines as soon as possible in order to vaccinate those at risk.

It should be remembered that monkeypox is a viral disease transmitted by rodents. It can be transmitted from person to person through contact with sick subjects.

However, if detected early and treated, it can be cured with few after-effects.
This is why we recommend that the entire population observe preventive measures, in particular:
- Avoid handling rodents (agoutis, rats, squirrels, etc.);

- Avoid contact with sick people, suspected cases and their soiled objects;

- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water after any contact;

- Isolate the patient at home or in hospital;

- Wear personal protective equipment when caring for patients;

The Ministry of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage reassures the population that the reported cases are sporadic without a real localized outbreak.

The relevant services are equipped to detect, diagnose and manage any new cases.

The Ministry of Health recommends that the population consult the nearest health center as quickly as possible in the event of any case of fever and/or rash.
