FOOD POISONING IN ANDE (ADZOPE): THE MINISTRY IN CHARGE OF HEALTH PROVIDES AN UPDATE

A health emergency occurred on December 12, 2025, in the village of ANDE, located in the Sub-prefecture of
Adzopé, region of Mé.

It is a collective food poisoning affecting adults and children, following the consumption of porridge.

To date, we have recorded 97 severe cases, including 54 children and 43 adults, requiring their transfer to the Adzopé
Regional Hospital Center where all measures have been taken to save the lives of the patients.
Given the seriousness of the situation, the Ministry of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage
activated the emergency epidemic-disaster response system and mobilized the rapid sanitary intervention
force to support the Adzope Sanitary District. This response team is composed of Epidemiologists,
Infectious Disease Specialists, Pediatricians, Psychologists, Resuscitators and Toxicologists.

The New Public Health Pharmacy immediately supplied the Adzope Regional Hospital Center with the necessary
medications and inputs for optimal patient care.

The Ministry of Health unfortunately deplores 9 deaths, including 8 children and 1 adult. In addition, 1 child under 6 years of
age was evacuated to the Gynecological, Obstetric and Pediatric Center of Cocody, 3 patients are in intensive care, 4 in
hospitalization (3 children and 1 adult) at the CHR ​of Adzopé and 80 patients released. The hospitalized patients are stable
and are under active surveillance. Investigations are underway to identify the exact cause of this toxico-infection.

The government invites the population to scrupulously respect the rules of food hygiene in this locality. In case of
symptoms, (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever) go immediately to the nearest health center.

The Ministry of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage assures the population that all necessary
measures are being taken for the care of patients.

patients and extends its condolences to the various bereaved families

In the face of the tragedy that claimed approximately one hundred lives and plunged the community of Andé into mourning on December 12th, linked to the consumption of a local porridge commonly known as "Bacca," the Minister of Health, Public Hygiene, and Universal Health Coverage, Mr. Pierre Dimba, attended the victims' funerals on behalf of the government. His presence was intended to demonstrate national solidarity and express the State's compassion to the bereaved families.

The funeral ceremony, marked by profound emotion, took place in the presence of numerous dignitaries, including Mr. Patrick Achi, Prime Minister, Minister of State, and Special Advisor to the President of the Republic; representatives from the Ministry of Solidarity and Social Affairs; elected officials and leaders from the Mé region; members of the prefectural corps; traditional chiefs; religious leaders; and many other individuals who came to offer their support to the bereaved families.

Speaking on behalf of the government, Minister Pierre Dimba indicated that he had instructed his services to fully investigate the causes of this food poisoning. The investigations, led by Professor Eholié Serge, revealed a mass food poisoning outbreak due to contamination of the ingredients used in the preparation of the porridge, particularly corn and sugar. Urgent measures have been taken to eliminate the implicated ingredients and prevent any recurrence.

According to specialized services, including the National Institute of Public Health (INHP), 97 severe cases have been recorded, including 54 children and 43 adults. The tragedy also resulted in the deaths of 11 children, aged between 16 months and 22 years. The injured are being treated in health facilities in the Mé region.
