Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves signed a decree to declare a state of emergency and prevent the spread of the virus in the country.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock announced that Costa Rica declared a state of national epidemic health emergency to fight against avian flu and promote its prevention, control and eradication. A measure that was taken this Wednesday to address the current situation of the spread of the disease.

Bird flu, also known as avian influenza, is an infectious disease caused by a virus that mainly affects birds. A virus that can reach humans by direct contact with infected birds or by contact with surfaces contaminated with the virus.

Data from the authorities indicate that the first outbreak of avian influenza in the country was detected on January 23, in four brown pelicans, on Cocles beach, in the province of Limón (Caribbean).
The President of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves, and the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Víctor Carvajal, signed a decree on Wednesday to declare a state of emergency and prevent the spread of the virus in the country.

"This emergency decree was made in order to have the necessary resources to prevent the spread of the virus in the country, to preserve the national sanitary status and protect the national and international marketing of poultry products and by-products," said the director General of the National Animal Health Service (Senasa), Germán Rojas.
The official added that another objective is to protect the jobs and family assets of all the people involved in the agricultural and agro-industrial sector dedicated to poultry activity.
