A report from the Ministry of Health in epidemiological week 42 warns that the Huetar Caribe region reports 5,218 cases, followed by the Central North, with 4,110, and the Central Pacific, with 2,556.

Likewise, the cantons (municipalities) with the highest number of reports are Puntarenas, with 1,490 cases, Sarapiquí, with 1,486 cases, and Pococí, with 1,375 cases.

However, in the rest of the cantons of the country, increases in cases and the circulation of three or four serotypes of dengue are reported, so it is extremely important not to let our guard down and reinforce prevention measures, the report warns.

The report highlights that the Ministry is working on actions to strengthen the prevention of this disease, and several measures were suggested, including the distribution of educational material and adequate care for patients, with follow-up to guidelines and care protocols established by the entity...

November 24, 2023. Dengue situation in Costa Rica. 22,561 cases

In Costa Rica, dengue cases have experienced a notable increase during 2023, reaching a total of 22,561 cases until November, which represents more than triple the cases reported on the same date of the previous year. This situation has led the Ministry of Health to issue a health alert since September, in an effort to contain the spread of this disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Health authorities have emphasized that, despite this increase, a decrease is expected in the coming weeks with the arrival of the dry season. However, surveillance is maintained and control actions have been intensified, such as fumigation and the elimination of mosquito breeding sites, especially in areas with the highest incidence of the disease.

Costa Rica Battles Surging Dengue Outbreak
By Tico Times
December 7, 2023

Costa Rica is facing an outbreak in dengue fever cases this year, including the reemergence of two serotypes not seen in over 20 years. According to data from the Ministry of Health, as of November 28th, 2,305 dengue cases have been confirmed via PCR tests. Notably, serotypes 3 and 4 are predominating, after not having circulated in Costa Rica since the 1990s.

“Typically, we see circulation of serotypes 1 and 2, but this year that changed with the return of type 3 and type 4 after 22 years without contagion,” the Health Ministry acknowledged. Current data shows 536 cases of type 1, 393 of type 2, 545 of type 3, and a stark 831 cases of type 4.

In total, the country has tallied 24,941 dengue cases this year so far, a drastic jump from the 7,485 infections recorded in 2022. The cantons witnessing the highest case counts are Puntarenas (2,300), Alajuela (2,134), Sarapiqui (1,617), Siquirres (1,591), Pococí (1,535), and San Carlos (1,376).

Health officials urgently advise residents to eliminate standing water and other mosquito breeding habitats around homes. “We call on people to constantly clean and empty water storage containers, check and clean canoes and black plastic in backyards, and shelter or properly dispose of unused tires,” the Ministry stated. They also ask citizens to cooperate with fumigation officials conducting home visits...

January 10, 2024

The Ministry of Health has reported a substantial increase in dengue fever cases in Costa Rica, with a total of 28,420 cases recorded in 2023. While no fatalities directly attributed to dengue were reported, authorities emphasize the significance of this data.

As of now, eight cases of “severe dengue” have been identified in various regions, and the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) has recorded 13 hospitalizations related to dengue.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes.
Costa Rica’s Concerning Situation

Costa Rica is currently grappling with the circulation of all four dengue viral serotypes, contributing to the widespread nature of the disease. The region itself has seen a surge in dengue cases, with Nicaragua reporting nearly 173,000 cases and Panama documenting 16,700 cases, according to the Health Information Platform of the Americas (PLISA)...
