Coroner: Mill Valley boy, 5, died of respiratory (H1N1) infection

A flu-stricken 5-year-old Mill Valley boy who died in March died of an acute respiratory infection, the coroner's office said Friday.

The boy's flu strain was confirmed as H1N1, generally known as swine flu, said sheriff's Sgt. Keith Boyd of the coroner's division.

"There was not enough to specifically say that influenza H1N1 was the exact cause," Boyd said. "It was present in his system. It was not at a level that our doctor felt it could be listed as the primary cause of death, but that it was worth noting."

In addition, the boy's autopsy showed slight cardiac hypertrophy, or an enlarged heart.

The cause of death was announced after a nine-week investigation that included blood tests and microscopic analysis.

The boy, a kindergarten student at Old Mill School, died March 4 at Marin General Hospital.

The boy?s parents informed Old Mill officials on Thursday evening that he was experiencing flu-like symptoms and would be kept at home Friday. Mill Valley Police and Mill Valley Fire personnel were called to the family?s home at around 8:30 a.m. Friday, and the boy was rushed to Marin General Hospital, according to Sheriff?s Lt. Scott Anderson.

The boy tested positive for influenza at the hospital and was pronounced dead at around 9:45 a.m., Anderson said. Anderson declined to comment on whether the boy had any other medical conditions that could have exacerbated the flu symptoms.
