QUEBEC — As is the case with any large gathering, people should stay away from funerals, weddings and receptions during the COVID-19 crisis, says Horacio Arruda, the province’s director of public health.
Arruda and Premier Fran?ois Legault were asked about the delicate issue of funerals during Monday’s briefing into the evolution of the coronavirus emergency.
Italy, for its part, has banned all funerals and weddings.
“It’s clear and it’s known that funerals are a good way to transmit infection because people are cheating” on the social distancing rules, Arruda said. “There are going to be some restrictions.
“We will suggest that if you’re sick, you don’t go to funerals. And if it is possible, express your caring for the family using the internet and phone. It would be a bad situation to have 150 persons crowded in a funeral home.
“It’s going to be the same thing for weddings. It’s going to be the same thing for receptions associated with those things.”
Added Legault: “We discussed this morning this situation about funeral services. I can understand that people want to meet other members of the family, but what Dr. Arruda is saying is you need to reduce the number of guests.”
The government was to issue a more formal directive on the issue later Monday...
