"News 8 Medical Reporter Jocelyn Maminta has talked to a credible source with the hospital who says the patient is one of the Yale Researchers who just returned from a trip to Liberia on Monday. This is one of the same researchers officials decided not to have quarantined after their trip to Africa."

I never thought we would be in a situation where it would be a relief to have malaria. But here we are.

Preliminary tests results on a patient who recently traveled to Liberia and was admitted to Yale-New Haven Hospital Wednesday night have come back negative for Ebola, a source within state government said late Thursday afternoon.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy had said earlier that if this first test proved negative, there would be no need for the second test.

I think it would be more reassuring to have a positive diagnosis--that is, for whatever the patient IS suffering from.

WHO guidance requires two tests several days apart before a negative confirmation can be made.

Call me cynical, but being able to claim 'no ebola here' for a few more days must be helpful for local government and emergency planners.

Laboratory Guidance for the Diagnosis of Ebola Virus Disease
Interim Recommendations
19 September 2014
...
The timing of specimen collection
 Specimens for molecular detection should ideally be taken when a patient exhibits symptoms that meet the case definition1 of EVD.
 If specimens are collected less than 3 days after onset of symptoms, additional specimens will be needed if the test result on the first specimen is negative. The second specimen should be collected at least 48 hours after the first specimen.
 Whole blood for serological testing can be collected after 8 days of onset of symptoms with strict infection prevention and control measures adhered to throughout the process, including waste disposal and disinfection. Refer to the WHO laboratory biosafety manual 3rd edition2 for appropriate biosafety practices.
