"There have been outbreaks in two area nursing homes," Dr. Gary Schleiter, chairman if infectious diseases at Danbury Hospital, said Thursday. "There have been cases of people coming into the emergency department with it."

The state Department of Public Health reported 35 gastrointestinal outbreaks in institutional settings from Jan. 1 to Feb. 8 in six of the state's eight counties, including Fairfield and Litchfield counties.

Likewise, the department said, state emergency rooms have reported an increase in the number of patients with vomiting and/or diarrhea, but above the baseline of the past two years.
