Congo: Dr Miandzo, first doctor to die of covid-19 in Brazzaville

Brazzavillians fell from the clouds this Tuesday, April 14, 2020 by discovering information on social networks. Doctor Miandzo had just died of Covid-19, for having tried to save human lives without appropriate protections.

The death of this doctor, the first death of a hospital staff announced in Congo-Brazzaville, reinforces the concern of the medical staff about the lack of means of protection.

This terrible death also reminds us that health workers are the first exposed to a serious and even violent epidemic, while many doctors and hospital staff denounce since the beginning of the health crisis the lack of masks.

"We know that we are exposed, that among us a good number will contract the disease, and it is unfortunately the price to pay for a dedication which is exceptional by these men and these women, always with the patients and, sometimes, with means to protect themselves that are sorely lacking, ”said an anonymous nurse.

"Protective equipment is absolutely essential for caregivers, but with or without protective equipment, you can be sick in your professional practice, you can be sick when you are a caregiver," she added.

It is recalled that the Republic of Congo has since April 13 seventy-four (74) confirmed cases of coronavirus (Covid-19) including ten healed and five dead.

Two new cases were recorded in the Pool department (south) while the others in the two largest agglomerations in the country, notably Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire.

Dr. Joseph Ngala, who was in charge of epidemiological surveillance in the ocean city, died of the virus at Adolphe-Cisse hospital.

On the front line facing Covid-19, doctors recorded their first deaths. In Pointe-Noire in Kouilou, Dr Joseph Ngala, in charge of epidemiological surveillance in the ocean city, succumbed to the virus at the Adolphe-Ciss? hospital, bringing the total to two doctors who have died since the arrival of the pandemic in Congo.

"He was given for death before his proven death which occurred today around 4 am. He had tested positive with CT images of the lungs 80% destroyed. Admitted into a sheave, intubated, ventilated until he died. It's sad. It’s absolutely dramatic for him, his family, his patients and all of us. The virus is indeed on our doorstep, "an anonymous doctor in Pointe-Noire told us, while underlining the extraordinary courage shown by all the doctors, caregivers, firefighters, and all those who help save lives every day.

Doctors, nurses ... Here is an overview of a profession that is paying a heavy price in the fight against Covid-19, due to its exposure to infected patients.

The Covid-19 pandemic continues to spread around the world, and particularly in Congo Brazzaville, with an increasing number of cases. The country which is entering its second week of containment now has 117 confirmed cases, including 83 local transmissions (37 in Pointe-Noire and 43 in Brazzaville, 1 in the Pool, 1 in the Basin and 1 in the Sangha). 10 cases were cured and 5 deaths.
