It's impossible to know until we have the sequences. This could be a minor difference, or this could be nothing at all. Then again, this could also explain the apparent difference in severity. But without sequences, no one knows.

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - An outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus is starting to ease in Argentina after killing more than 160 people at the start of the southern hemisphere winter, the health minister said on Wednesday.

The new flu strain, which emerged in Mexico and the United States earlier this year, spread quickly in Argentina. Health officials have closed schools and urged people to avoid crowded places to try to control it.

Health Minister Juan Manzur, who took office at the height of the swine flu outbreak, said the number of patient queries and hospital admissions had fallen by up to 35 percent.

"When we compare (the situation) to 15 days ago, we're better today. That doesn't mean we're fine; the alert continues," Manzur told Reuters in an interview. Argentina is the worst-hit country in South America.

He said the H1N1 strain had shown no signs of mutating or of developing resistance to medication, but had become the most dominant flu virus in the country of 40 million where around 1 million people catch the flu every year.

"It's superseded the rest of the viruses. One of its characteristics is rapid transmission; it spreads quickly," he added.

Argentine analysts have said total economic losses from the outbreak could reach $2.5 billion as consumer spending drops. The tourism sector has been particularly hard hit, as foreign travelers worried about exposure cancel trips.

They're probably talking about a minor change then. But the actual Spanish in the first article says that an announce from Malbran will be coming in minutes. That should tell us more.

It is also possible that this is a reference to seasonal flu and not Pandemic. The term "H1N1" does not appear in that article at all.

There seems to be some discrepensies in the articles, is it different or the same?

My gut feeling from reading the original Spanish, is that the "difference" is that this virus was isolated in an Argentinian lab, not an American or Mexican one. I trust Mr. Mansur's direct quotes more than the first article in this thread.

Early last May, and from the identification of the first positive case of Influenza A (H1N1) recorded in Argentina, began to work on the characterization of the genome of these viruses, from the collection of sequences of the segments HA, NA, NS and M seven virus recovered in cell cultures.

Preliminary analysis of the sequences obtained, we infer that the virus circulating in Argentina has a low number of changes of amino acids, when the comparison with other viruses circulating in other parts of the world. Was not detected nor the presence of changes that might confer resistance to antiviral Oseltamivir is used to treat the disease.

The professionals who are part of the Department of Virology Institute Malbrán, led by Dr. Elsa Baumeister, responsible for this research, with the cooperation of the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University (USA) and also with the cooperation of private companies (Quintiles and Roche 454 Life Sciences). Both research centers are part of networks of WHO and PAHO to study these viruses. The studies also took part, Dr. Ian Lipkin, director of the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University and Columbia Dr. Viviana Molina, Director, INEI-ANLIS.

Through the rapid collaboration among public health institutions, academic and private, are able to obtain results that may be used as a basis to try to respond to the concerns generated in the severity of the influenza epidemic in Argentina.

According to virologists who worked on the investigation will be necessary to obtain a greater number of genomes and pathogenicity studies in models of cell cultures and animals to get a definitive answer as to the pathogenicity of the strains circulating in our country .

This information is preliminary results achieved within a broader project working between two institutions which provides for the molecular study of more strains obtained during the outbreak and in particular cases of severe or fatal.

Sorry. Wrong scientist. That was said by Dr. Rios, from the Malbran lab itself, who is probably a better source that even Mr. Mansur. (Or should hat be Dr. Mansur?)

And Dr. Niman's (now I know HE is a Dr.) article above agrees.

This could be the seven other gene segments. They may only have HA (or NA).
Press release makes it clear that several gene segemnts were sequenced, and the virus is Argentina is essentually the same as the virus isolated worldwide, with no "obvious" differences.
